A study on the Application of integrative Arts Therapy for Anger Reduction and Communication Enhancement원문보기

This study is a case study of applying Integrative Arts Therapy to upper elementary school students and their parents’ anger reduction and communication enhancement. The participants included 4th to 6th grade students and their mothers. The researcher designed the Integrative Arts Therapy program based on catharsis, projective, role, masking inner child, self-shadowing, and time traveller model in the IT Manual developed by Youjin Hong(2015), and used at least two arts media in each session. In order to evaluate the change in participants’ anger and communication, in-depth interview, creative works, recordings and photos taken during the sessions were assessed. Also, participants’ both verbal and nonverbal expressions were qualitatively analyzed.
As a result, Integrative Arts Therapy was found to be effective in reducing anger and enhancing communication between 4th to 6th grade students and their mothers. Specifically in this study, using game and emotional expression methods in catharsis model or role model of the IT Manual to children and using projective model to mothers resulted in positive reactions from participants. In both cases, applying same arts media between two participant groups also resulted in positive reactions. In addition, 5th and 10th sessions, which children and mothers joined together for the session, with time traveller model played an important role in inducing positive change in participants. Experiencing mutual change rather than unilateral change in one group led participants to perceive more positive effect in the change and have hopes for a new relationship.
By designing and applying Integrative Arts Therapy program to upper elementary students and mothers for their anger reduction and communication enhancement, this study has a significance for evaluating positive and negative reactions of participants in sessions and suggesting more effective way to do research in similar groups. The researcher hopes further researches to be done for academic development and clinical application of Integrative Arts Therapy.
