기존의 60 GHz 대역 안테나들은 대부분 적층 구조 형태의 LTCC(Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic) 공정을 통해 구현하였다.

This dissertation presents studies on broadband millimeter-wave antennas for 60-GHz high rate close proximity applications. With the advancement of millimeter-wave technologies, short range communication applications of unlicensed 60-GHz frequency band become popular recently due to their advantages such as a frequency reuse, a minimizing interference, and a high data rate of gigabit-to-second (Gbps). High Rate Close Proximity (HRCP) wireless communications of IEEE 802.15.3e are considered as a strong candidate for 5th Generation (5G) in Korea, which continently exchange a lot of multimedia features, such as pictures, videos, and etc., due to high-speed data transfer, fast connection, and intuitive user interface. The HRCP communication technology can provide a peak data rate of multi-Gbps within a distance shorter than 10 cm. It also provides wireless power transmission to a device without a built-in power source. Especially, the HRCP system provides up to 3.5 Gbps data rate within 10 cm with a low power consumption under 100 mW. This enables transfer of very large files like multimedia videos in a very short duration of time. This technology makes possible "touch-and-go" transfer of large multimedia files. Typically, most of antennas used in these 60-GHz applications have been implemented with multi-layer structure in LTCC(Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic) process to obtain a wide bandwidth covering 60-GHz band, a high reliability pattern on each layers, and a low loss in designing RF/Microwave elements. However, the complexity of antenna fabrication and manufacturing cost can be increased due to the LTCC process. For commercialization and miniaturization, there have been very few studies on wideband antennas with a printed circuit board(PCB) fabrication process. Despite these challenges, it is difficult to obtain a wide impedance bandwidth, an wide axial ratio(AR) bandwidth, and a high gain in the 59 - 64 GHz band of unlicensed 60-GHz frequency range with the PCB fabrication process. In this dissertation, for commercialization of HRCP system, a novel broadband 60 GHz antennas and WPT antenna are designed to archive 60 GHz/WPT dual mode operation. First, the antennas, Type 1, 2, 3, and 4 of a novel 60 GHz antenna structure, are proposed for HRCP system. Type 1 is embedded within the multi-layer PCB fabrication process by using Teflon and FR-4 PCB substrates. Type 2 is printed by single-layer PCB fabrication process. To archive a wide circular polarization(CP) band with the PCB package structure, Type 1 and Type 2 are proposed by using a new broadband circular microstrip patch antenna structure and a traveling wave antenna, respectively. Type 3 and 4 are proposed to archive a wide CP band with only FR-4 PCB package structure. To obtain a broad bandwidth characteristic on the FR-4 substrate, Type 3 and Type 4 are proposed by using a cavity-backed broadband circular microstrip patch antenna structure and a traveling wave antenna, respectively. Moreover, the structures of antennas are proposed to improve impedance bandwidth and gain by considering the dielectric loss at the millimeter-wave band, so that a low-cost and high-reliability package solution is realized. Second, a novel WPT antenna is proposed to realize dual mode 60GHz/WPT operating for HRCP system. In order to meet specification of Qi standard, a modified-parallel 12 turn structure is proposed by using the PCB fabrication process. The proposed WPT antenna can be attached on the parallel double layer structure, which has the lower RDC and comparable Ls value than that of the conventional WPT antenna, to meet specification of the higher Q value (Q≥77) and the system efficiency of 50% in the WPT mode. Moreover, the dual mode 60 GHz and WPT antenna is proposed and studied to reduce influence on the 60 GHz antenna performance due to the WPT antenna when the simultaneous operation performs. This dissertation proposes new 60-GHz antennas of Type 1 to 4 structure and WPT antenna for simultaneous operation at dual mode 60 GHz and WPT antenna, which give better performance for covering the 60-GHz frequency band in HRCP system. This is verified by the measurement of fabricated antennas with real manufacturing PCB processes. It is noticed that the proposed 60-GHz antennas and WPT antenna can be applicable for mobile devices (smartphones, tablet PCs, and wearable devices) of the HRCP application.
