Digital communication technology is developing rapidly even at this very moment, and it is maximizing what phenomena the digital means we have at our disposal today are making possible. There are, however, adverse consequences brought about by these means, but due to the hyper-reality and entertainment values they come with, people tend to turn a blind eye to them and even enjoy them. This is especially true in the case of films. In the era of language/text communication, people enjoyed myths, legends, folklore, jokes, etc., and engaged in various forms of metaphor as they created works or art. The sum of these has been dubbed "culture." But as digital communication hinders the transmission of language/text communication, everything is changing. People nowadays tend to rely excessively on expressions, are oblivious to metaphors because their language is too straightforward, and try to understand everything based on its literal meaning alone. Their ability to grasp connotations is severely deteriorated, so they process everything in a way similar to how computers execute their tasks, preferring denotation. The language used by digital technology does not distinguish between things that are similar and things that are the same. The reason many people exalt idols is because they take sculptures or lucky charms to be actual personifications of gods or the "alter ego" of gods. They confuse metaphor with metonymy. Digital technology and film technology create a lot of perversion effects, including the perversion of perception, of the truth, and of good and bad. What's more tragic is that people prefer illusions (lies) over truth, the former being far more appealing and often more realistic than what is real. Dealing with these harrassments by digital and film language would require a special ability that can overturn such a phenomenon. Just like it was important to have conversation skills in the age of language communication and one had to be skilled in reading comprehension in the age of text communication, in this day and age, we need to be familiar with semiotic analysis. Semiotics helps us find and understand hidden meanings in images, and discover their myths by creating discourses out of them. Whereas we had a data-information-knowledge-wisdom hierarchy in the language/text communication era, in the era of digital communication, we instead deal with a data-information-functions-script hierarchy. There are three kinds of people we need to distinguish between here. The first is the public, the second is the small group of experts, and the third is the elites, which amount to very few. The elites are hidden from public view. That's because they are akin to gods, and have slipped into the background to be inaccessible to the public eye. Like gods, they exert enormous power from unseen places and lay out the order for new technology. They are the designers of the new system of order. The public is restricted to the raw data, which constitutes the bottommost part of the hierarchy, and has no access to the information, functions, and scripts. The few experts get to handle the information and functions, but are denied access to the scripts. The scripts are for the elites to write, make, and plan. They are sole property of these "gods," and are impenetrable to the rest of the people.
This thesis made an attempt to analyze films that were most influenced by the rapid advancement of digital and film media and have influenced our lives the most. The two films of choice are by director Park ChanWook and by director Lee ChangDong. Both are rooted in family ideology, and center around the theme of child abduction murder. Jeon Do Yeon, the actress who starred in , became the first Korean actress to receive a Best Actress Award at Khan International Film Festival for her performance in the movie, and received the Best Picture Award at The Blue Dragon Awards. Both movies prompt us to contemplate the essence of 'family love' and 'true salvation of the soul.' The fact that the protagonists in these films are not killed on-screen, unlike in most recent Korean films that have been box office successes, is also a reason why I chose these works. The audience's tendency to perceive what they see in the film as real connects the movie culture to one of the most fundamental problems we face. Every technological advancement is a double-edged sword. Technological advancement contributes to the progress of society and the greater good, but it can also be used to serve purposes that are quite negative. Whereas when we read, we constantly process thoughts and accumulate knowledge, scenes from movies enter our conscious directly, like instant food that needs no preparation. If this is repeated, our thinking abilities(reading comprehension ability) will slowly deteriorate and we will inevitably become used to simply "doing as we are told," just like the new system of order in a dystopian society would have us do. I used various confirmed methods of semiotics as we engage in analysis. Also, we draw from Lacan's psychoanalytic theory for our analysis of characters' behaviors.
