Ferulic acid(4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid), a phenolic compound is distributed abundantly in the plant tissue, in particular in the husks and bran part of grains. This compound also plays an important role in biological activity of many types of foods. Ferulic acid contents of agriculture by-products were compared. Corn bran showed the highest ferulic acid content; therefore, it was selected for extraction yield study. as a result, corn bran was selected. The effect of NaOH concentration, reaction temperature and time on the ferulic acid yield was evaluated. According to the preliminary optimization using response surface methodology, the optimized conditions were 1 M NaOH, 90℃ and 5h. This condition was not feasible to apply this condition to large scale. To obtain the same extraction yield with more cost effective method, the effect of microwave-assisted extraction(MAE), ultrasound -assisted extraction(UAE), and ultra high pressure treatment were compared in terms of ferulic acid extraction yield. MAE was found to be the most effective extraction method. Optimization with RSM revealed the best yield was obtained with 0.5M NaOH, 1% solid content, and 4.7 times microwave treatment. This condition was considered to be appropriate for commercialization.
