The purpose of this study was to investigates the relationship between preschoolers’ smart media usage and their development, especially the mediating effect of preschoolers’ smart media addiction tendency and the moderated mediating effect of maternal guidance on smart media usage.
In this study, three variables are estimated to affect the relationship between preschoolers’ smart media usage time and their development. They include a mediating variable(preschoolers’ smart media addiction tendency), a moderating variable(maternal guidance on smart media usage: active mediation, co-use, restricted use, selective restriction, and monitoring), and moderated mediating variable(maternal guidance on smart media usage). These may serve as vulnerable or strengthful factors, according to relevant theories and researches.
The study surveyed 273 preschoolers’ mothers who lived in Daegu City and Kyungpook Province, Korea. The data were analyzed to see descriptive statistics, correlation, mediating effect, moderating effect, and moderated mediating effect by using SPSS 23.0 and PROCESS macro. In addition, the regression analysis was performed on to response of 262 preschoolers’ mothers excluding 11 preschoolers who did not use smart media.
The major findings of this study were as follows; First, preschoolers’ smart media addiction tendency mediated the relationship between their smart media usage time and fine motor skill development, cognitive development, language development, and self-help development.
Second, there were main effects of maternal guidance on preschoolers’ smart media addiction tendency and their development. Specifically, maternal active mediation and monitoring moderated the relationship between preschoolers’ smart media usage time and their smart media addiction tendency. Maternal monitoring moderated the relationship between preschoolers’ smart media addiction tendency and fine motor skill development, cognitive development, and language development.
Fourth, maternal co-use moderated the mediating effect of preschoolers’ smart media addiction tendency on their fine motor skill development and language development.
In conclusion, preschoolers’ smart media addition tendency mediated the effects of their smart media usage time on fine motor skill development, cognitive development, language development, and self-help development. Among the mediation pathways, the influence of preschoolers’ smart media addiction tendency on fine motor skill and cognitive development was moderated by maternal co-use.
The findings of this study suggest that maternal guidance should be applied differently depending on preschoolers’ smart media addiction tendency. Thus, this study, which examined preschoolers’ and maternal smart media-related variables on preschoolers’ development, will provide preliminary data that can be used to explore the maternal guidance on how to use smart media for their preschool children. Futhermore, future researches on smart media contents used by preschoolers would provide more specific information on the impact of smart media on preschoolers’ development.
