In recent decades, biomass-derived nanostructured carbon electrodes for supercapacitors have been widely investigated due to their environmental stability, low-cost, high specific surface area, and excellent electrical properties. This dissertation introduces the preparation and characterization of three different types of carbon-based electrodes for supercapacitor applications by facile techniques, such as electrospinning, carbonization, in situ polymerization, and hydrothermal. Carbon nanofiber (CNF) mats were prepared from new precursors, poly (acrylonitrile-co-itaconic acid) (poly (AN-IA)), poly (acrylonitrile-co-crotonic acid) (poly (AN-CA)), and poly (acrylonitrile-co-itaconic acid-co-crotonic acid) (poly (AN-IA-CA)) copolymers. Flexible polyaniline (PANi) decorated CNF (PANi/CNF) hybrid electrodes from new carbon fiber precursors were fabricated successfully. The homogeneous growth of PANi nanoparticles (NPs) on CNF mats was achieved by an in situ polymerization technique. Interestingly, the electrochemical behaviors of PANi/CNF prepared from poly(AN-IA) was relatively higher than other two electrodes. Besides, kenaf-derived porous carbons (KPCs) were obtained by carbonization of two different kinds of kenafs (kenaf stem and NaOH retting kenaf). The fibrous PANi was synthesized by in situ polymerization, the PANi was uniformly formed as fibrous structures on the surface of the networks of KPCs. Two different PANi decorated KPC composites exhibited outstanding cyclic stability after 2000 cycles. The technique of in situ polymerization of PANi is a facile, low-cost, time-efficient, and promising approach to make electrodes for energy storage devices. In addition, we fabricated nanostructured binary NiCo2O4 decorated CNFs. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/lignin based CNFs (PAN/lignin CNFs) with different contents of lignin were prepared by electrospinning, stabilization, and carbonization. Afterwards, the NiCo2O4 were deposited on the surface of CNFs by a facile hydrothermal method without any toxic reagents. Remarkably, unique nanostructured NiCo2O4, such as nanosheets, nanoneedles were coated on the surface of CNFs. The obtained flexible NiCo2O4-decorated CNFs with 50% lignin (NiCo2O4@CNF55) electrode exhibited high specific capacitance up to 1757 F g-1 at a current density of 2 mA cm-2 and excellent cyclability around 138% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles at a current density of 7 mA cm-2, suggesting lower internal resistance and higher electrochemical reversibility. Moreover, the practical application of as-fabricated NiCo2O4@CNF electrodes was evaluated by assembling NiCo2O4@CNFs//N-rGO asymmetric supercapacitor devices using NiCo2O4@CNF as the positive and N-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) as the negative electrode with PVA-KOH gel electrolyte. The NiCo2O4@CNF55//N-rGO asymmetric supercapacitor device exhibited a specific capacitance of 134.3 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1, and achieved a maximum energy density of 47.75 Wh kg-1 with a power density of 799.53 W kg-1. The biomass-derived carbon nanocomposites prepared in this dissertation provided an effective supporting material for the decoration of PANi and NiCo2O4 nanostructures, which could considerably reduce the weight and improve the electrochemical performance of supercapacitor devices. Significantly, the as-fabricated NiCo2O4@CNFs//N-rGO solid state asymmetric supercapacitor device exhibited a high specific capacitance and possesses brilliant energy density and power density.
