The female North Korean defectors simply attempted to defeat the problem of survival at first, but this led to a permanent defection due to various reasons, and they eventually have lived as defectors in South Korean society. However, since the process from defecting to settlement in South Korean society is far from smooth, it seems that female defectors are experiencing repeated family disunity and reconstruction in the process. These experiences also affect their adaptation process in South Korea and sometimes become a conflict factor between reconstructed family members. This study was carried out to understand the reality of family separation and reconstruction experiences in the process of setting up South Korean society through female North Korean defectors' experiences. By examining the meaning of this experience, we will be able to understand their lives and find ways to support their settlement in South Korea. To do this, we used narrative inquiry as a research method and interview 10 female North Korean defectors to examine the experience of family separation and reconstruction in the process of settling down in North Korea, China, and South Korea society. The main results of this study are as follows. First, female North Korean defectors chose to escape from the country in a struggle to survive the extreme conditions due to extreme economic difficulties and problems of status faced by the 'North Korean famine' in the 1990s. In most cases, the border crossing was based on the premise of returning to the North Korean society, but due to an unexpected situation, the family often could not be reunited. Second, many defectors were exposed to human trafficking because of their unstable status in China, and there were many cases of choosing a de facto marriage with a Chinese as a means of securing immediate security. However, they seemed to have constantly attempted to escape from the Chinese family either for returning to North Korean society or for going to Korea after some adjustment period. In this process, the birth of children in Chinese family has led their later lives to a more complex direction. Third, family restruction played a major role in the settlement of the South Korean society for female North Korean defector. This aspect appeared as a reunion with the North Korean family or the Chinese family, and a combination with the North Korean defectors or South Koreans. However, neither case was able to escape the influence of previous family composition and separation experiences. They have made every effort to bring all their families they had left behind, especially their children, and have been working hard to support North Korean families economically. But the problem of supporting the family affected the family composed in South Korea, and in the worst case, they had to experience family separation again. Fourth, female North Korean defectors settled in the South Korean society and devoted their efforts to bringing their children to South Korea or supporting their families. However, they were not regally protected at all and only had to use private channels to help their family. In this process, they were exposed to significant risks. This also hinders their adaptation to the South Korean society. Fifth, although female North Korean defectors were skeptical of whether reunification would be achieved, but they still had the perception that unification was the only solution. At the same time, they are certain that they could play an important role in the reunification process and in the unified Korea era after reunification. Therefore, for the effective adaptation of female North Korean defectors who have family disunity and reconstruction experience to South Korea society, it is necessary to provide a system that can support the problems related to family separation first. The understanding of actual situation of children and family members in North Korea and China should be preceded, and helping them to support their family in a stable manner is needed. It should also be prepared for various diplomatic and legal problems that can be derived from the process of promoting the child's entry into South Korea. Second, it is necessary to intervene in the problem of domestic family conflicts after the settlement of South Korean society due to experience of family separation and reconstruction of female North Korean defectors before their arrival in South Korea. It is necessary to adjust the role of the organizations related to North Korean defectors such as Hanawon, Hana Center and the Korea Hana Foundation. Third, it is necessary to change the perception of South Korean society about female North Korean defectors. It is needed to have an attitude to accept their unfortunate experience, and they should be counted as an important asset of our society for reunification.
