Hair dyeing and bleaching are often used as an action for expressing outward beauty or supplementing flaws like premature gray hair, but the chemical/physical action occurring in the treatment process and repetition bring about hair damage and result in hair not being restored to healthy hair.
Thus, this study was conducted to assess hair damage, to check the change of the tissues in dyeing treatment utilizing peptide as a pre-treatment agent and to utilize the results as the data for the use of the peptide content’s function of hair protection and the development of products using the content in the future.
As for research method, this study divided hairs into four groups and treated general bleaching for Groups A, C, and D, and treated bleaching after pre-treatment with peptide for Group B. In other words, the groups were divided into a group of hairs not treated with bleaching treatment and three groups treated with bleaching, one, two and three times, respectively. Group A was a control group. Group B was a peptide-pre-treated group. Group C was a dyeing-treatment group, treated with general dyeing. And Group D was a pre-treatment and dyeing group, treated with dyeing after pre-treatment with peptide. Then, the dyed hairs were pre-treated with peptide after general dyeing and three times of bleaching, and the surface of the dyed hair was checked using scanning microscopy while for tensile strength, a solder pull-off force tester was used. The difference in hair color was checked, using a color-difference meter. In addition, these hairs were shampooed five times at an interval of two days, and the difference in hair color was checked, using the color-difference meter.
As a result, the pre-treatment and bleaching group got less damage to the cuticles as compared to the general bleaching group, had less phenomenon of the hair cuticles sticking together and melting down even with repeated treatments. Through the picture, it was found that unlike the non-treatment and dyeing group, in the pre-treatment and dyeing group, even in hairs bleached several times repetitively. Cuticles did not melt down and there was a phenomenon of the separation of cuticles. In the pre-treatment and dyeing group, unlike the dyeing-treatment group, the tensile strength was high, regardless of the number of times of bleaching. As for L* value according to the number of times of bleaching, the more the number of times of bleaching, the lighter the color became in the non-treatment group and the color became sharply lighter at one time of bleaching in the dyeing-treatment group. As for a* value, the more the number of times of bleaching, the closer the color became to the red in both the non-treatment group and the dyeing-treatment group. It turned out that the increase was the lowest between one time and three times of bleaching. It turned out that in the pre-treatment and dyeing group, the color rapidly changed into red till the hair was bleached two times. As for b* value, the color changed into yellow with the increase of the number of times of bleaching in the non-treatment group and the dyeing-treatment group. In the pre-treatment and dyeing group, the color changed the most to the yellow at three times of bleaching. As for L* value, the color difference in the dyed hair according to the number of times of shampooing and pre-treatment, for the hairs not bleached (zero time of bleaching), the difference in L* between one time and five times of shampooing in both the dyeing-treatment group and the pre-treatment dyeing group. In addition, at one, two and three times of bleaching, the more the number of times of shampooing, the higher the brightness became in the dyeing-treatment group. As for a* value, for the hair not bleached, the color decreased and became closer to green at five times than at one time of shampooing in the dyeing-treatment group, while it increased and became closer to red at five times than at one time in the pre-treatment dyeing group. As for b* value, in no bleaching, the more the number of times of shampooing, the closer the color became to yellow in the pre-treatment dyeing group as compared to the dyeing-treatment group. It turned out that for the hair bleached one time, it became closer to yellow at five times than at one time of bleaching in the dyeing-treatment group, while it became closer to blue at five times more than at one time in the pre-treatment dyeing group.
Through this study, it was found that the pre-treatment of the hair using peptide has strengths, such as the function of protection as artificial protective film, the prevention of changes in color because of fading and the increase of the maintenance of the hair dye’s unique color. Also, this study has a significance that it proved the peptide content’s function of protecting hair in the conditions that affect hair damage such as bleaching, dyeing, and shampooing through photography, tensile strength and a color-difference meter.
