The colour of indoor luminous environments affects the circadian rhythm and awakening of humans. If the blue colour of a luminous environment perceived by an observer’s circadian action factor (CAF), which represents the impact of light on the hormones and biorhythm of an observer, is high, the secretion of melatonin is supressed. To design an appropriate indoor luminous environment, the final colour of a space perceived by an observer must be accurately predicted and its effects on the observer must be considered. Therefore, this study developed a Colour Quality Assessment Tool (CQAT) that utilizes the spectral reflectance factor of interior finishes and the spectral power distribution (SPD) data of luminaires. In addition, this study evaluated the accuracy of the CQAT by comparing with full-scale mock-up, and analysed the difference between colour quality of light radiated by luminaire and colour quality of light perceived by observer using the CQAT. Based on accuracy evaluation of illuminance calculation by CQAT, high accuracy was shown with mean illuminance error within 1%. Based on accuracy evaluation of CIE 1931 x-y colour coordinates calculated by CQAT, error of 0.0012~0.0036 was shown compared to measurement values. This error range corresponds to MacAdam Ellipse Step 1~2, indicating extremely high accuracy where most people cannot identify colour difference. Based on accuracy evaluation of wall CCT calculated by CQAT, all cases showed extremely low mean error ratio of 0.63~2.04% except for [Case A 3], which showed relatively high mean error ratio of 7.37%. This is probably due to characteristics of the CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram where error of colour temperature increases as colour gets closer to blue. Based on accuracy evaluation of CCT, SPD and CAF of luminous environment perceived by the occupant calculated by CQAT, high accuracy was shown with mean error ratio of 1.5%, 1.37% and 0.56% compared to measurement values, respectively. The colour quality of different interior finishes was assessed using the CQAT, and the results showed that the luminous environment CCT perceived by an observer differed by 1,882 K (approximately 31%) or more and that the CAF differed by 0.16 (approximately 14%) or more based on the colour of the interior finishes. The errors in the CCT and CAF further increased as an observer moved closer to the walls. Therefore, when designing a human-centric luminous environment that considers the effect of the luminous environment on the observer, a tool similar to the CQAT proposed in this study should be used to account for the effect of the interior finishes. To increase the calculation accuracy, control functions for the room size, interior material specularity, and finite element size will be added. A tool will be developed that can consider the effect of furniture, daylight, individual characteristics of the occupants, and other factors. By making improvement on limitations of CQAT, CQAT can be ultimately applied to websites of luminaire manufacturers. Buyers can configure finishing materials by several clicks, select a luminaire to be purchased, and preview colour quality of luminous environment before purchase. If a finishing material for standard space is selected and target colour quality value is entered, the system automatically recommends a luminaire that can accomplish target colour quality and assists convenient and smart purchasing experience. In addition, CQAT can be utilized to evaluate popular Circadian light, light colour quality and indoor luminous environment or to develop evaluation indicators.
