As the application range of the lithium secondary battery continuously increases, the importance of improving the energy density, high capacity and light weight of the battery is gradually increasing. Graphite, which is one of the most commonly used anode material, has very stability but relatively low theoretical capacity of 372 mAh/g. On the other hand, in case of non-graphitic carbon(carbon black), there the electrochemical properties(e.g. capacity) vary depending on the crystallinity, specific surface area, pore distribution, etc. These carbon blacks are generally produced by incomplete combustion or pyrolysis of hydrocarbons, but require very high temperature and pressure when they produce. In this study, liquid phase plasma process was used to fabricate carbon black at room temperature. When the plasma generate inside the organic solvent, the carbon atoms present in the solvent is reduced to carbon nano particles. Through the TGA/DSC and BET analysis of the synthesized carbon black, we set the heat-treatment condition with 450 ℃ for 20 minutes to improve microstructure and crystallinity. However, the crystallization occurred just the surface of the carbon black particles. To further develop crystallinity and microstructure of carbon black, we used mixture of benzene and distilled water. According concentration decrease of benzene, the micropore size of carbon black was increased. And carbon black synthesized from 14% benzene solution showed homogeneous and well-crystallized shape like carbon nano onion. The improvement of the crystallinity and the increase of the micropore size conduced the reversibility and cycle stability of lithiation and delithiation reaction. Also we compared electrochemical property of synthesized carbon black and two conventional carbon blacks(KB, SP), the synthesized carbon black exhibited higher initial reversible capacity than the other carbon blacks. In dQ / dV curve of 1st cycle show that the commercial carbon blacks have a sharp peak at a specific voltage, while the synthesized carbon black has smooth curve over wide voltage range. It is expected that this phenomenon is caused by, SEI formation reaction, interfacial reaction between the electrode and the electrolyte. SEI is known that is strongly affected to battery performance such as initial irreversibility, cycle stability, etc. However, there is great difficulty in experimentally analyzing and predicting these reactions occurring inside the cell. To further investigate the decomposition of electrolyte molecules and SEI formation, we used computational science technique, ReaxFF based molecular dynamics calculations. The reactive force field is the potential created based on first principles calculation, so it can calculate chemical reaction such as bond formation and bond breaking in multi-scale. Using this method, we calculated anode-electrolyte interface reaction with the various electrolyte composition and with/without additives on silicon and silicon oxide electrodes. Based on these calculations, we could confirm the mechanism of the decomposition of electrolyte molecules and the effect of additives such as VC and FEC. For these simulations, we completely developed ReaxFF of C-H-O-Si-Li-F system, it provide a basis for predicting the effect of various elements and combinations of various electrolyte and additives composed that elements. We hope that this ReaxFF will be a very powerful tool for electrolyte design and SEI analysis.
