The purpose of this study is to systematically examine the psychological factors that affect smart-media addiction in youth and to demonstrate their association with health problems. The study subjects were 409 high school and middle school students in Seoul metropolitan area, and data were collected using verified standards. The results showed that the level of egocentrism was greater in males than in females, whereas reward responsiveness in the behavioral activation system (BAS) was higher in females. Both sleep deprivation and physical symptoms, which are health problems, were greater in females. In contrast, problems and interpersonal conflicts related with smart-media addiction were greater in males. Students with fewer friends showed higher levels of egocentrism, loneliness, feelings of isolation and helplessness, as well as health problems including stress response, somatization, fatigue and depression; moreover, they had higher rates of problems and interpersonal conflicts resulting from smart-media addiction. With respect to academic performance, poor academic performers showed greater feelings of loneliness, isolation and helplessness, with loneliness being particularly elevated. Stress response and reward responsiveness in BAS were also elevated in poor academic performers. Students whose fathers had lower levels of education showed greater feelings of loneliness, isolation and helplessness, whereas students whose mothers had lower levels of education had higher rates of health problems such as sleep deprivation, somatization, stress response, fatigue and depression. Students from low economic backgrounds had higher levels of egocentrism and feelings of loneliness and isolation. Compared with students from high economic backgrounds, those from medium and low economic backgrounds both had greater feelings of helplessness. Health problems such as stress response, somatization, fatigue and depression were also greater in students from low economic backgrounds. When the differences in smart-media addiction were analyzed with respect to the characteristics of smart-media use, there were significantly higher rates of smartphone addiction in the following students: those who spend more time on smartphones, who are aware of the need to reduce their phone use, who are frequently reprimanded by their parents, and who are criticized by their peers about their phone use. Significant association was found between smartphone addiction in youth and each of the control variables in inner personal psychological factors, but no significant association was found only between problems and interpersonal conflicts related with smart-media and reward responsiveness. Significant association was also found between smart-media addiction and each of the control variables in health problems. However, there was no significant association between smart-media addiction and interpersonal conflicts or sleep deprivation. Psychological factors such as egocentrism, feelings of loneliness and BAS had high explanatory power (40.9%) for youth smartphone addiction. Impulsive and compulsive use and resistance in smart-media addiction had 8.6% explanatory power in youth sleep deprivation. Impulsive and compulsive use, withdrawal, resistance, problems and interpersonal conflicts in smart-media addiction had 26.9% explanatory power in stress response. And impulsive and compulsive use had 18.1% explanatory power in physical symptoms. Stepwise linear regression analysis showed that feelings of helplessness was the strongest factor in smart-media addiction, with 32.7% explanatory power. Next were parental reproach, reward responsiveness, egocentrism, friends’ criticism, feelings of isolation and age, in the order of decreasing association with smart-phone addiction. In conclusion, the results, discussions and hypotheses of this study will serve as useful basic information for youth smart-media addiction counseling, education and program development as well as policy research.
