The objectives of this study were to investigate the independent and interactive effects of IASTM and PNF on the physical strength elements and evaluate how these effects can have effective influence on the improvement of exercise performance and injury prevention by examining the effects of IASTM and PNF on the range of joint motion and the maximal strength of ankle in healthy males in the 20s. Physically healthy male adults were randomly allocated to an IASTM group (N=20) and a PNF group (N=20). The range of joint motion under a non-weight bearing condition, the range of joint motion under a weight-bearing condition, dynamic stability by using Y-Balance test, and maximum muscle strength were measured before and after these techniques and the obtained results were analyzed. The effects of each technique on the range of joint motion, dynamic stability, and maximum muscle strength were evaluated. The difference in the effectiveness before and after intervention of the two techniques and the comparison of the two techniques were analyzed by using the two-way ANOVA repeated measure. Post-hoc analysis was conducted by using the independent t-test and the paired t-test. The following conclusions were obtained. First, both IASTM and PNF significantly improved the range of joint motion, dynamic stability, and maximum muscle strength, when comparing the before and after the intervention. Second, in the case of the non-weight bearing range of plantar flexion motion, IASTM was more effective than PNF. Two groups also showed a significant difference in dynamic stability. The plantar flexion among maximum muscle strength were also significantly different between the two groups. The results of this study suggested that IASTM and PNF significantly enhanced the range of ankle joint motion, dynamic stability, and maximum muscle strength. When two groups were compared, IASTM was more effective PNF. The results revealed that both IASTM and PNF were effective intervention methods for enhancing the ankle functions. Especially, the results of this study indicated that IASTM would be a more effective intervention method than the PNF, the conventional performance enhancement and injury prevention intervention method. However, additional studies will be needed to evaluate the effects of them on the control and sustained effects for other muscles and the combined treatment through various experimental designs in order to give practical benefits to athletes.
