3 장은 SPEEK, 술폰산된 poly(vinylenedene fluoride-co-hexa fluoropropylene) (SPVdF-HFP) 및 1,3,5 또는 7 wt%의 GO을 이용해 합성한 막에 대해 보고하고 있다.

Fuel cell is an electrochemical device which directly converts chemical energy to electrical energy by consuming fuels without emitting green-house gases. Among various types of fuel cells, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are gaining much attention because their key advantages of high power density, quick start up and shout down time, compact cell design, adaptability for both portable and stationary usages and low/zero emission profile. Until now, perflurorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes such as Nafion are considered state-of-the-art proton exchange membranes (PEMs), which have long term durability, high electronic insulation, high proton conductivity and unique hydrophilic percolation. The practical applications of PEMFCs are mainly limited due to the drawbacks of Nafion, which include (i) high cost due to the complex synthesis procedure, (ii) high fuel crossover, (iii) low glass transition temperature and (iv) conductivity decline at high temperature (>80 ℃) and low humidity (<80 %). To tackle these problems, studies on fabrication of modified Nafion membranes or alternative PEMs are being thrived. Recently, the research on functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) based composite PEMs are being thrived. It has been endorsed that blending of FGO as ingredient in the PEM amplifies physiochemical, thermomechanical and electrochemical properties significantly. Chapter 1 briefly describes general introduction to PEMFCs, operating principle, various components of PEMFCs and fuel cell losses and durability. A brief overview of the functionalized carbon nanomaterials based PEM is the subject of the thesis. Motivation of the work and problem and manipulations are also given in detail. Chapter 2 presents the effects of SGO incorporation on the properties of sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). A simple, but effective, functionalization of GO is performed by sulfonic acid to increase the number of sulfonate groups per unit volume of GO domain. Followed by its composite membrane with SPEEK was fabricated via a facile solution casting method. A detailed discussion on morphological, physiochemical and thermomechanical properties membranes is also presented. Proton conductivity and single cell measurements were performed to understand the suitability of composite membrane toward PEMFC applications. The single cell delivered the maximum power density of 634 mW/cm2 at load current density of 1374 mA/cm2 when operating the cell at 70 ℃ and 100% RH. Chapter 3 reports ternary hybrid membrane comprising of SPEEK, sulfonated poly (vinyledene fluoride-co-hexa fluoropropylene) (SPVdF-HFP) and GO with 1, 3, 5 or 7 wt%. In the ternary hybrid membrane, SPVdF-HFP increased per cluster volume of SO3H groups and GO increased the number of directional hydrogen bonds, which collectively provided good impact in proton conductivity. At 90 ℃, the peak proton conductivity attained by the SPEEK was 68 mS/cm, while that of the ternary hybrid was 122 mS/cm, 1.7 times better conductivity. In chapter 4, iron oxide (Fe3O4) anchored functionalized GO (FGO) is applied as magnetically active filler as well as a solid proton conductor to realize an aligned hybrid membrane with blended polymer matrix consisting of fluorinated poly (arylene propane biphenyl) (FPAPB) and SPEEK. A constant magnetic field of 0.25 T is applied to perpendicularly align Fe3O4-FGO to the cross-section surface of membrane during solution casting process. Among fabricated membranes, SPFSGF-5 (aligned) exhibits superior proton conductivity of 13 mS/cm at high temperature (120 ℃) and low humidity (20%). The superior behavior of SPFSGF-5 (aligned) membrane is credited to (i) excess concentration of SO3H provided by high surface FGO, (ii) intrinsic character of Fe3O4 nanoparticles to retain bound water molecules and (iii) creation of high compact pores at the interface of Fe3O4-FGO and polymers. Chapter 5 reports the potential of Nafion/Fe3O4-SGO composite as a PEM for PEMFC that operates at high temperature and low humidity. Water absorption and proton conductivity of Fe3O4-SGO ameliorate effect of conductivity on Nafion/Fe3O4–SGO. The PEMFC with Nafion/ Fe3O4–SGO membrane delivers a peak power density of 258.82 mW/cm2 at a load current density of 640 mA/cm2 when operating the cell at 120 ℃ and 20% RH, while the PEMFC with pristine Nafion membrane delivers a peak power density of only 144 mW/cm2 at a load current density of 431 mA/cm2 under identical operational condition. Chapter 6 summarizes the findings of various PEMs presented in this thesis and their comparative electrochemical properties towards proton conductivity and fuel cell performance. The future scope of the work is also highlighted. All research reports mentioned in this thesis have been published and submitted to international journals.
