These days, the energy storage market is rapidly growing based on various materials such as LiFePO4 and Li[Ni1-x-yCoxMny]O2, starting with LiCoO2. In addition to small storage devices for power supplies for existing notebooks and mobile phones, the market is expanding into various fields such as medium-sized storage devices for electric vehicles and storage devices, and mass storage devices for power plants. However, compared to this market growth, the lithium ion battery market is suffering from many problems. First, in the case of LiCoO2, which has the largest market dominance, cobalt prices are continuously rising, and many toxic substances are generated when batteries are produced. In addition, lithium, which is the base of lithium-ion batteries, is also concentrated in certain regions such as China and South America, which could lead to the weaponization of raw materials and the sharp increase in the price due to the rapid spread of the market. To overcome this phenomenon, we are researching various materials in various countries such as USA and Japan. These studies are proceeding in two major directions. First, there is a plan to improve and develop existing lithium ion battery systems. In detail, it is to develop a material having superior capacity performance and high rate characteristics than hard carbon, which is a commercially available negative electrode active material and the case of the cathode active material, a method of developing a new cathode positive material having a high energy density without using cobalt is proposed in order to improve the low energy density. Second, new ions suggested as a way to develop a new ion battery system out of the existing lithium ion battery system are sodium, potassium, and zinc. In this study, the research was divided into four parts, lithium anode, lithium cathode, sodium cathode, and zinc ion batteries, based on vanadium, which has various oxidation states ranging from 0 to 5+ and can be used both as cathode and anode. The three parts were divided into the development of electrode materials for lithium ion batteries, the development of electrode materials for sodium ion batteries, and the development of electrode materials for zinc ion batteries. In the first part, LiVOPO4, which can be used as an anode material, was synthesized as a water-in-oil type and heat treatment was performed at various temperatures to obtain an optimum single-phase condition. The single phase electrode material was fabricated from a CR-2032 coin cell and its electrochemical performance was evaluated. The structural changes in charge and discharge processes were confirmed through various measurement methods, and the cause of high rate characteristics was identified. In the second part, the cathode material was also studied. The Li3V2(PO4)3 was synthesized by using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method, and optimal composition was confirmed by doping various compositions of Mn. The electrochemical performance of the synthesized electrode material was evaluated, and it was confirmed that how the Mn doping improves the electrochemical performance by affecting the electrode material. It was confirmed that Mn doping can be applied to other materials. In the third part, Na3V2(PO4)3 was synthesized by the combustion method using Li3V2(PO4)3, a cathode active material for lithium ion battery, which was studied in the case of a cathode active material for a sodium ion battery. The cathode active material was subjected to surface modification using a carbon based material and Mn doping was applied to improve the electrochemical performance by applying the previous research. In addition, to investigate the effect of Mn doping on the material and its participation in the electrochemical reaction, various analytical methods and the first calculation were used. Moreover, to confirm the feasibility of commercialization, a full-cell with hard carbon as a anode was fabricated and its performance was evaluated. Finally, zinc ion battery is different from conventional lithium and sodium ion batteries because it is difficult to electrochemically react at high voltage based on water electrolyte. Therefore, research was conducted using VO2(B), which is capable of producing high capacity at low voltage. VO2(B), which was used as an active material of zinc ion battery, was synthesized by solvothermal method. The synthesized material was used as an electrode material after washing and drying, and the electrochemical performance was evaluated by using a coin cell using zinc metal as a counter electrode. In addition, the location of zinc ion insertion into VO2(B), which has not been studied previously, is confirmed through the first calculation and proved through various analysis methods. In addition, a composite with rGO was synthesized to improve the electrochemical performance, and the lifetime performance was remarkably improved. The effect of electrolyte decomposition reaction and side reaction materials formed on the electrolyte during charge and discharge processes was confirmed by ex-situ XRD and XPS. From above result of the study, various electrode materials for ion batteries showed the same or superior electrochemical performance as those of existing commercialized materials. The various materials developed through the above studies are high cost cobalt-free electrode materials that have been pointed out as a problem in existing ion cells. Researches that can suggest new directions in the energy storage device market as electrode materials for new ion batteries to be.
