This is the age of life-share. Companies fight with customers, not their competitors(Kim, 2016). Ultimately, the core of marketing is how lifestyle of customers occupy and utilize. This study examined comparison with others in SNS through social comparison theory, and looked at the relationship between self-awareness, defense mechanism and communication effects. Previous social comparison studies have been studied in face-to-face situations, so study1 conducted a focus small-group interview with SNS users to obtain real information about social comparison on SNS. As a result, it was found that SNS caused upward and lateral comparisons. The types of comparisons were appearance comparison, background comparison, time comparison, and thought comparison. The reasons for the comparison are intimacy, relevance and popularity. After comparison, feelings of self appeared in self-esteem, depression, stimulation, healing, etc. Feelings of others were such as envy, admiration, longing, show-off, caper and flaunting. Based on the result of study1, the study2 demonstrated self-awareness, defense mechanism, and communication effects based on social comparison in SNS. The research method used a survey questionnaire, it lasted about two weeks from August 11, 2018 to August 25 and snowball sampling of nonprobability sampling used for the study. As a result, a total of 458 surveys were completed, but 400 copies were used for the study, without 58 not enough responses. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, including the results of preceding researches and the study1, social comparison factors were derived as upward and lateral comparisons, self-awareness factors were derived as self-congruence, self-satisfaction, self-esteem. And defense mechanism were derived as passive aggressive, identification, rationalization, idealization and devaluation, communication effects were derived as brand awareness, brand attitude, and brand purchase intention. In summary, the results of the study2 are as follows. First, as a result of the hypothesis that social comparisons in SNS will affect self-awareness, upward comparisons have affected self-awareness. Lateral comparison have affected all of self-awareness, self-satisfaction and self-esteem. Second, as a result of the hypothesis that self-awareness will affect defense mechanism, self-congruence was partly supported by the hypothesis as it was influenced in the order of identification, idealization, rationalization, and passive aggressive. Self-satisfaction had negative effects in the order of passive aggressive, idealization, and devaluation, so hypothesis was partially supported. Self-esteem has significant effect on passive aggressive, rationalization, and idealization, therefore the hypothesis has been partially supported. Third, as a result of the hypothesis that the psychological defense mechanism of the individual will affect communication effects, passive aggressive had negative effects on brand awareness, the hypothesis was partly supported. Identification had significant effects in the order of brand recognition and brand purchase intention, so the hypothesis was partially supported. Rationalization appears to have a significant impact only on brand awareness, with the hypothesis partially supported. The hypothesis that idealization will affect communication effects were supported by the verification result, in the order of brand attitude, brand purchase intention, and brand awareness. Passive aggressive only seemed to affect brand awareness, so the hypothesis was partially supported. This study aims to help build marketing communications by examining consumer sentiment through frequent phenomenon occurring on SNS. Given the high interest in fashion products and beauty products on SNS and the visibility of lifestyle by users, I think the results of this study can also provide useful ideas for marketing strategies such as brand launching and repositioning through SNS.
