The Effects of Multicomponent Nursing Intervention for Family Caregivers with Acute Stroke Inpatients
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of multicomponent nursingintervention for familycaregiverswithacutestrokeinpatients.
The design of the research was a nonequivalent control group pre and post-test design. Participants were 55 family caregiver (experimental 27, control 28) who have has inpatients with acute stroke in K hospital. The study was carried out from July 26 to November 3, 2017. The multicomponent nursing intervention was given in eight twice weekly sessions. As outcome variables, psychological and physical health, caregiving demands, self-perception, stress management were measured at the end of sessions by research tools. The research tools included SF-36 health survey questionaire, caregiving burden, caregiving mastery, coping behavior patterns. The collected data were analyzed using t-test, chi-square test, Fisher's exact probability test, Pearson's correlation coefficient with the SPSS program.
Development of the multicomponentnursingintervention proceeded as follows:
(1) The program was based on the guideline of structural model of factors that influence the health of caregivers by Raina et al.(2005). The multicomponentnursingintervention consisted of education about caregiving demand, narrative therapy for positive self-perception, aromatherapy for stress management. The multicomponentnursingintervention consisted of 8 sessions from 30-60 minutes with two interventions per week with face to face intervention from expert.(2) The multicomponentnursingintervention were finalized after expert group validation of structure, formation, and content.
The results of this study are as follows:
Hypothesis 1: "There will be a difference in the caregiving demands (time, difficulty) of the experimental group participating in the multicomponentnursingintervention and the control group not participating." was supported (time: t=6.54, p<.001, difficulty: t=5.79, p<.001).
Hypothesis 2: "There will be a difference in the self-perception of the experimental group participating in the multicomponentnursingintervention and the control group not participating." was supported (t=-6.22, p=.004).
Hypothesis 3: "There will be a difference in the stress management of the experimental group participating in the multicomponentnursingintervention and the control group not participating." was supported (t=-2.83, p=.007).
Hypothesis 4: "Caregiving demands and health of family caregiversinacutestrokeinpatients will be related." was supported (time: r=-.64, p<.001, difficulty: r=-.52, p=.005).
Hypothesis 5: "Self-perception and health of family caregiversinacutestrokeinpatients will be related." was rejected (r=-.04, p=.849).
Hypothesis 6: "Stress management and health of family caregiversinacutestrokeinpatients will be related." was supported (r=-.64, p<.001).
Hypothesis 7: "There will be a difference in the psychological and physical health of the experimental group participating in the multicomponentnursingintervention and the control group not participating." was supported (psychological health: t=-5.84, p=.003, physical health: t=-7.41, p<.001).
According to the above results, this multicomponentnursingintervention for familycaregiversinacutestrokeinpatients were effective for improving psychological and physical health, reducing caregiving demands, improving self-perception and stress management. Health of family caregiversinacutestrokeinpatients was correlated with caregiving demands and stress management, but not with self-perception.
