This study was a time difference experiment before and after conducted on a single group to discover the effects of listening to preferred music on anxiety, pain, and stress during arteriovenous fistula puncture in hemodialysis patients. The subjects consisted of 30 patients with chronic renal failure under hemodialysis through the outpatient department of M nursing hospital in Ycity of Gyeongbuk. This study was conducted to evaluate the anxiety, pain, and stress states of patients with hemodialysis during arteriovenous fistula puncture without intervention. Then, after 2 weeks, an intervention was conducted during which they listened to their preferred music, and anxiety, pain, and stress states were observed during arteriovenous fistula puncture in the hemodialysis patients. In this study, the anxiety and pain status during arteriovenous fistula puncture in the hemodialysis patients were measured by Numeral rating scale and the degree of stress was checked by blood pressure and pulse. Data were analyzed using frequency and percentage, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H, paired t-test using SPSS 18.0. The support of the hypothesis was as follows. 1. Compared with the control period, the anxiety in the experimental period participating by listening to their preferred music was decreased during arteriovenous fistula puncture(t=14.76, p<.001 ). 3. Compared with the control period, the pain in the experimental period participating by listening to their preferred music was decreased during arteriovenous fistula puncture. (t=9.36, p<.001 ) 4. The systolic blood pressure (t = 4.44, p <.001) and diastolic blood pressure (t=4.03, p <.001) were lower in the experimental period participating by listening to their preferred music than in the control period during arteriovenous fistula puncture, and the pulse (t=0.40, p <.696) showed no significant difference. As a result, it was confirmed that the preferred music listening intervention was a nursing intervention to reduce the anxiety and pain, and the stress at least partially, in the patients with hemodialysis.
