Corrosiveness of tap water may result in rust formation, deterioration of pipe materials and ground subsidence in distribution system. In this study, the effects of residual chlorine and calcium on internal corrosion of water pipes were investigated by applying emulsifying device to increase solubility of Ca(OH)2. Applicability of Ca(OH)2 emulsifying technology was evaluated to overcome low solubility of Ca(OH)2 in conventional method which can lead to turbidity problems. By applying this technique, Ca(OH)2 particles could be homogenized into fine sizes up to μm, which can improve the solubility of Ca(OH)2. When the technique was applied to the clear well of a water treatment plant, Ca(OH)2 dissolved within two hours, and turbidity of the treated water did not increase. In addition, the value of Langelier Index (LI), the corrosivity index of tap water, were improved to control the corrosivity of tap water, and to prevent internal corrosion of water pipes. Adding Ca(OH)2 into the water could increase the residence time of chlorine which can reduce injection amount of chlorine for disinfection of the water. The residual chlorine concentration should be maintained at least 0.1 mg/L to ensure microbiological safety against pathogenic microorganism, but not more than 0.3 mg/L to minimize corrosion inside the water pipes. Therefore, the Ca(OH)2 dissolution technology using emulsifying devices was found to be a useful technique for preventing corrosion of inner pipes as well as supplying minerals. Combining Emulsifying technology with controlling residual chlorine could be very useful in maintaining proper distribution system and reducing internal corrosion, which has significant economic effects by extend the life time of the pipes.
