This study compared and analyzed syntactic complexity, vocabulary usage pattern, and story comprehension at each session to investigate the effect of the story retelling program on children with language delay.
Children with language delay use a delayed form of the language or an abnormal language rule. This is due to a lack of comprehension or expressive power expected at a certain age, which is beyond the normal level of language development. Children do not develop their language according to their age, they have few words and lack the ability to speak or understand words. When compared to normal children, the children with language delay are more likely to talk about only a part of contents of a story or tell story which is not related to a story. In addition, they showed the characteristic of lexical words only without composition of a story plot, and syntactic problems such as short sentence length, complex sentence problems, and high syntactic errors appear to be the most common problems. As children with language delay use limited language when compared to normal children in syntactic language use, the syntactic complexity and vocabulary usage patterns of children are appropriate for assessing children's speech.
On the subjects of three children aged four to six with their level of language development between –1SD and ‐2SD who resided in Gyeongnam province, the intervention was carried out for 16 times in this study. It proceeded in the phases of baseline‐intervention‐maintenance, and spontaneous speech was collected at each session to analyze syntactic complexity and vocabulary usage patterns. Story comprehension was measured, and a multiple baseline design was performed among subjects.
The results of this study are summarized as follows.
First, in the results of conducting the intervention using the story retelling program, syntactic complexity was increased in all three children, and after the intervention, the score of the maintenance stage was higher than that of the baseline stage.
Second, in the results of conducting the intervention using the story retelling program, although there was no significant change in the lexical diversity of all three children, all three children showed a large increase in the number of different words and the total number of words.
Third, in the results of conducting the intervention using a story retelling program, the scores of story comprehension of all three children were significantly improved compared to those before the intervention.
