Recognizing the seriousness of global warming recently, we present a research and application of renewable energy materials to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Among them, high-purity hydrogen gas is obtained through electrochemical water decomposition elements, or energy storage and conversion systems are attracting attention. In this study, photoelectrochemical water-splitting material research using photoelectrode is used to efficiently decompose water at a voltage lower than 1.23 V, which is the electrolysis voltage of water using solar energy. It aims to research low-cost and eco-friendly photoelectrode material using seawater that occupies more than 70% of the earth's surface. The photoelectrode is based on an oxide semiconductor and proposes a functional oxide semiconductor photoelectrode using a TiO2 base having excellent chemical resistance, which does not have photo corrosion and is not eroded from seawater. The Ti metal substrate for forming TiO2 has the advantage of having flexibility by using a Ti metal in the form of a mesh and has the advantage of allowing the smooth flow of the electrolyte and the surface due to the extra space. TiO2 can grow an oxide having various types of surfaces depending on the method of formation. In this study, high-regular nanotube TiO2 (TNT) was grown using anodization to form a structure with a higher specific surface area than nanopowder and nanowire. The surface changes and crystal phases of TNTs were determined according to heating temperatures (500 ℃, 750 ℃, 850 ℃, and 900 ℃), and photoelectrochemical analysis in seawater was performed to ensure water decomposition and stability in seawater. Quantum dots such as CdS to improve the oxidation reaction of water were deposited on the surface of the photoelectrode, and TiN was deposited on the surface of the photoelectrode to improve the reduction of water. The battery measurement was performed using the photoelectrode sample produced in the negative electrode of the seawater battery currently used. In the seawater battery using photoelectrode, the voltage efficiency is 96%, which is higher than that of the existing seawater battery (~ 76%). The photoelectrode contributes to lowering the charging voltage but does not contribute much to increase the discharge voltage, which is lower than that of the conventional seawater battery. The charging and discharging were separated, and the photoelectrode was used for charging, and the electrodes of the seawater battery were used for discharging to maximize the charging and discharging efficiency (voltage efficiency ~ 109%).
