In this study, to remove fine particles from a wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system in a coal-fired power plant, we developed a flat-plate type wet electrostatic mist eliminator (EME), with a narrower gap and higher gas velocity than a conventional electrostatic precipitator (ESP). (1) Particle removal efficiencies were compared among differing shapes of the discharge electrode, including varying horizontal and vertical distances between spiked edges, and varying the height of the discharge pin support. The particle removal efficiency of the flat plate-type electrostatic precipitator was maintained when the horizontal and vertical distances between spiked edges and the height of the discharge pin support were below threshold levels. Those variables may be important factors for designing the shape of the discharge electrode. (2) Particle collection and pressure drop performance tests were conducted at the laboratory scale for the EME with a single-channel geometry and collection area of 0.5 m2 at various gas velocities and applied voltages. The results were compared to those achieved for a Chevron type ME. The pilot EME, which was designed based on the laboratory-scale device, had a collection area of 4.68 m2 and was tested at a fixed velocity of 4 m/s, with and without the Chevron type ME. Its long-term performance was evaluated for approximately 400 min. (3) Evaluation of EME with long-term operability was conducted for 30 days. After 30 days of continuous operation, it was confirmed that PM10 removal efficiency was maintained at about 90 to 92%, and for applied voltage and current variation, the trend of current with 1st layer of EME started to decrease since 25th of operation. It is recommended to install additional nozzles at both ends of the collection plates by reviewing the injection angle and flow rate of the nozzle.
