This study was conducted to understand the guidance awareness and practice awareness of children’s dietary habits in parents and teachers and to provide the baseline data of dietary habit guidance in which the family and the educational institution could coexist. For this purpose, a statistical analysis was conducted with 266 parents and 62 teachers in national/public, corporate, and private childhood educational institutions (Childcare centers and kindergartens, etc.) in Chungcheongnam-do from May 7 through 29, 2019, and the results are as follows.
Both parents and teachers recognized the necessity of dietary habit guidance high, and teachers’ recognition was higher concerning the counseling and request for parents’ dietary habit guidance.
Concerning the problems in infant dietary life, both parents and teachers recognized an “unbalanced diet” the highest, and both parents and teachers recognized infant dietary life education as a factor affecting until adulthood.
Contents and guidelines for the education of dietary habits have been prepared in 98.4% of educational institutions, and 85.5% experienced dietary habits-related education. As for the institutions where the education was completed, most experienced in related institutions (Comprehensive childcare support center, etc.), and both the content of the education completed and the content of education necessary were “infants’ unbalanced diet guidance methodology,” so it was found that they attached importance to the management of unbalanced diet guidance.
The dimensions for children’s dietary habit guidance were classified into four factors of unbalanced diet guidance, including “eating independence”, “eating behavior and attitude”, “table manners”, and “cleanness.” In parents’ awareness and practice of children’s dietary habit guidance, their awareness of “eating independence”, “eating behavior and attitude”, “table manners”, and “cleanness” was higher than their practice, and teachers had higher awareness than practice of all factors of unbalanced diet guidance, including “eating independence”, “eating behavior and attitude”, “table manners”, and “cleanness.”
As for the difference between parents’ and teachers’ awareness of children’s dietary habits, in the factors, including “eating independence”, “eating behavior and attitude”, “table manners”, and “cleanness,” teachers had a higher awareness than parents did, and teachers had a higher practice awareness of all factors of unbalanced diet guidance, including “eating independence”, “eating behavior and attitude”, “table manners”, and “cleanness” than parents did.
Of the factors of the awareness of dietary habit guidance, “cleanness” affected in those who recognized the necessity of dietary habit guidance 5.865 times more than those who recognized that it would not be necessary. “Eating behavior and attitude” were 2.624 times higher, and “cleanness” was 1.534 times higher in those who experienced dietary habit guidance counseling and request. In addition, those who recognized that “cleanness” would affect dietary habit guidance recognized it 3.356 times higher.
Of the factors of the practice of dietary habit guidance, affected “eating behavior and attitude” 2.403 times higher in those who experienced dietary habit guidance counseling and request, and of the factors of the awareness of dietary habits, “eating behavior and attitude” affected 10.145 times higher in those who recognized dietary habits would affect adulthood, as compared to those who recognized that it would not.
The level of awareness of dietary habits was high, but there were many difficulties for the guidance that would lead to practice in the actual childhood education, and especially, it was expected that there would be difficulty in “unbalanced diet guidance” compared to other education and guidance. Thus, in educational institutions, it is necessary to provide an educational opportunity for teachers and cooks who instruct dietary habits to conduct the right education of dietary habits and to prepare a plan for the exchange of parents’ opinions on regular counseling and education/guidance as well.
