Conducting polymer hydrogel offers several advantages, such as facile synthesis, high conductivity, excellent redox behavior, structural robustness, and outstanding mechanical properties. Herein, we report an efficient strategy to form polyvinyl alcohol-polyaniline/graphene hydrogels (PVA-PANI/graphene HDGs) with excellent scalability, significantly improved mechanical, electrical, and electrochemical properties, which is utilized for coin cell supercapacitor. Formation of the PVA-PANI/graphene HDGs can be achieved simply through the formation of boronate (–O–B–O–) bonds between PANI and PVA chains, and strong intermolecular interactions between graphene, PANI, and PVA chains make a further contribution to form stronger and more rigid HDGs. Furthermore, we have found that the nanofiber-like PVA-PANI HDG can be produced at an optimal amounts of PVA (5 wt %), resulting in better charge transport properties compared to previous work on PANI HDGs. The PVA-PANI/graphene HDG has shown superior tensile strength (8.10 MPa) and higher specific capacitance (498.9 F/cm2, 166.3 F/cm3, and 304.0 F/g) compared to PVA-PANI HDGs without graphene sheets. The remarkable reliability of the PVA-PANI/graphene HDG was demonstrated by 92.6 % retention after 3000 cycles of galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles. Such advantages of PVA-PANI/graphene HDG enable the coin cell supercapacitor assembled with the HDG as a promising energy storage device for mobile and miniaturized electronics.
