This paper proposed the method to control the game difficulty in real-time during playing the game by collecting and analyzing player behavior patterns and various variables through artificial neural networks. And we have verified how much the dynamic difficulty control model shows an effect compared to the existing fixed difficulty model and how much it affects the player's interest. In the existing fixed game level design, the difficulty was predetermined by the level designer, and it had to be played in a fixed manner according to the stage or the difficulty selected by the player at the start of the game. This can easily adapt to the difficulty and pattern of the game and become boring, depending on the player's ability and experience, or, conversely, cause the game to be too difficult from the beginning to give up playing on the way. Therefore, dynamic difficulty control can make a great contribution to extending the life cycle of the game. In this paper, when the player plays the game, a total of 10 variables related to the player's character, variables related to the enemy character, and variables related to the stage environment are stored as training data, and the data are learned through the artificial neural network model. It allows artificial neural network to learn behavioral patterns about how players play when they are in a certain environment, without relying on simple variables such as shooting accuracy and the record as the stage the player had previously reached. In the experiment of this paper, a top-view genre game was used, and was conducted through experiments by testers. Before the proposed model was applied, there was a gap in skills between the testers, and the interest tended to differ accordingly. However, when the dynamic difficulty adjustment model proposed in this paper was applied and then played, the player who could not play the game could easily progress through the stage. In addition, players who are good at playing were able to prevent boredom in the easy section at the beginning by playing a game that was difficult overall. In addition, through the record of the testers, it was found that players with different behavior patterns can grasp their skills, and it was confirmed that even if there is a change in numerical value due to a mistake, it is possible to determine the appropriate difficulty level by identifying the behavior patterns in real-time. The method proposed in this paper can be applied to various genres such as fighting games, shooting games, and FPS games as well as top-view games. In addition, it will help to reduce the gap in sensational difficulty among players with different skills, which can help during the level design and testing stages during game development.
