The purpose of this study was to analyze the structural relationships among career stress, mindfulness, self-compassion and career preparation behavior of university students. For this, the structural relationships among career stress, mindfulness, self-compassion and career preparation behavior of university students were examined. Second, the mediation effects of mindfulness were examined in the relationships between career stress and career preparation behavior of university students. Third, the dual mediation effect of mindfulness and self-compassion was examined in the relationship between career stress and career preparation behavior.
For this study, 900 male and female students of universities located in Gyeongsangnam-do and Busan area were surveyed. 868 data were used for the final analysis, 32 data were excluded because of unfaithful response.
The career stress test used as a measurement tool consists of four sub-factors such as career uncertainty, job pressure, lack of information and external conflict. The survey was composed of 20 questions. The career preparation behavior test consists of four sub-factors : information gathering activities, tool preparation activities and goal achievement activities. The survey was composed of 18 questions. The mindfulness test consists of four sub-factors : current awareness, attention concentration, non-critical acceptance and de-centered orientation. The survey was composed of 20 questions. The self-compassion test consists of three sub-factors: self-friendliness, mindfulness and universality. A questionnaire was composed of 26 questions. The final reliability was confirmed to be high reliability with career stress .917, career preparation behavior .882, mindfulness .923, and self-compassion .885.
The data were analyzed with structural equation modeling by the SPSS 21.0 program and Amos 21.0, which determined mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis.
The findings of this study were as follows. First, the effect of career stress on mindfulness was -.727 (p<.01), and the effect of career stress on career preparation behavior was -.242 (p<.01), which was found a negative effect. The effect of mindfulness on self-compassion was .675 (p<.01) and the effect of mindfulness on career preparation behavior was .196 (p<.05), which was shown to have a static effect. The effect of self-compassion on career preparation behavior was .178 (p<.05), which was found to have a positive effect.
Second, it was also found that the mediation effect of mindfulness had a significant as -.100 (.007) in the relationship between career stress and career preparation behavior. Third, the double mediation effect of mindfulness and self-compassion was shown to be significant as -.058 (.009) in the relationship between career stress and career preparation behavior.
Based on the research results, the implications are as follows. First, in the relationship between career stress and career preparation behavior, the process and mechanisms for enhancing career preparation behavior were empirically verified by presenting a structural model for reinforcement variables. In other words, it is possible to develop various programs based on this by providing empirical data on the fact that the variables of career stress, career preparation behavior, mindfulness, and self-compassion can be considered to increase each effect at once.
Second, the cultivation of mindfulness and self-compassion is in line with the recent positive psychological position. It is that through the cultivation of mindfulness and self-compassion, it is possible to promote psychological well-being by realizing that one's hardship is part of the universal experience of man. Therefore, it corresponds to the recent positive psychological trends.
Third, it is necessary to apply a program to improving the level of mindfulness and self-compassion in career counseling in that mindfulness and self-compassion are mediated between career stress and career preparation. It is expected that students will be able to overcome career stress through experience of widening self-understanding and insight through the cultivation of mindfulness and self-compassion. It is also predicted that they can obtain a big help from these activities in personal growth and change after successful social entry.
