Systematic education of synesthesia expression for Chinese Korean learners, in order to reduce the misunderstandings in communication and enhancement of expression skills in Korean through the deep understanding of Korean culture. Chapter 1 of this study presented the purpose and necessity of the research and examined the research methods and previous studies. In chapter 2, we have looked at the concepts and understanding of synesthetic expression, and characteristics of taste adjectives and synesthetic adjectives. In Chapter 3, we have analyzed college textbooks and corpus to identify the usage patterns of taste adjectives in synesthetic expression. As the result of analysis of six college textbooks, synesthetic expression was not well shown. We could see that there was no systematic education of synesthetic expression in the textbooks which many of Chinese learners use. A corpus is a material that can find the usage patterns in the actual language used, and we analyzed the Yonsei corpus and The National Institute of the Korean Language corpus. With the basic adjective of ‘acidic, sweet, salty, spicy, and bitter’, the form was searched as ‘acidic, sweet, salty, spicy, bitter’. As a result, ‘acidic’ and ‘bitter’ were shown the most. However, ‘sweet’ had the most synesthetic expression. We could find synesthetic patterns of five basic taste adjectives in the corpus, which were not seen in college textbooks. In chapter 4, taste adjectives appearing in Korean and Chinese were analyzed in contrast by form, meaning, and synesthetic way. For example, ‘sweet’ was used similarly in both languages as a positive expression, a tendency to feel good and agreeable to mine. However, in the case of ‘acidic’, it was used in various way in Chinese language, such as pain in various parts of the body, appearance of poor, jealousy, and mind, where as in Korean it was used as meaning of ‘have a cold knee’. The taste adjective with the least extension of meaning in both languages was ‘salty’. There was no such extension meaning expression. In the case of ‘spicy’, both Korean and Chinese showed same extension of meaning, with one difference in usage of weather, where spicy weather is used as meaning of very cold in Korean, but very hot in Chinese. In chapter 5, the results of the analysis in textbooks and corpus were contrasted with the synesthetic patterns of Korean and Chinese, and the goals for each level of education and the contents were selected through this analysis. Based on the proposed education system, we have verified 25 learners and 25 teachers for the feasibility. As a result, 84% of learners responded it helped their understanding synesthetic expression, and for teachers, the content of activities on the differences in expression between ‘ Korean and Chinese’ turned out to be most relevant. In the current education system where there is a lack of synesthetic expression education, discussions on how to teach synesthetic expression through the results of the contrast between two countries’ taste adjectives could be a way to develop communication skills by the use of various vocabularies, which is very important for Chinese leaners who learn Korean language.
