Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the regulation of blood sugar concentration is impaired. Healthy diet and eating habits play an important role in preventing the progression of diabetes and complications, and interest in improving dietary habits and nutrition is expected to increase. In Korea, there are special medical-purpose foods for diabetes patients and health functional food. However, for some reasons, there is a lack of clinical studies on the empirical confirmation of nutrition drinks for diabetes. Also, there is a form known as ‘converged health functional food’of the pilot project led by government, but there is no comparative study on the consumption of medical food and health functional food together. Therefore, this study was an exploratory study to investigate the changes in blood glucose levels when consuming a diabetes- specific nutrition drink compared to a standard nutrition drink, and to examine any changes when consuming the diabetes-specific nutrition drink and a health functional food(Banaba leaf extract) that may assist in suppressing postprandial blood glucose levels. The intervention period of the study was 2 weeks, and the subject selection criteria were adults with a fasting glucose level of 100~126mg/dL, or who had impaired glucose tolerance or glycated hemoglobin of 5.7~6.4%. 24 subjects completed the entire study and the subjects were in diabetes mellitus supplement group(DMS, n=8), diabetes melllitus+functional food group(DMS+FF, n=8) and control group(Control, n=8). All subjects were given CGM and consumed the nutrition drink for 2 weeks, DMS received 150kcal of nutrition drink for diabetes-specific, DMS+FF received 150kcal of nutrition drink for diabetes-specific and a tablet of health functional food(Banaba leaf extract) and Control received 150kcal of standard nutrition drink. On the start and end dates of the study, blood glucose test was conducted before each drink intake and each 30 minutes for 2 hours. Anthropometry investigation and body composition including body weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, percent body fat were also investigated. In all groups, there were no significant changes in BMI, body weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass and percent body fat between the start and end dates of the study. In AUC of blood glucose level following the consumption of nutrition drink, DMS had a significantly different value at 30 minutes compared to the control group and DMS+FF showed a tendency to decrease, but no significant difference was observed. In all groups, there was no significant difference in CGM. In conclusion, consuming diabetes-specific nutrition drink showed lower blood glucose levels compared to standard nutrition drink, but there was no observed additional effect on postprandial blood glucose suppression when health functional food was consumed additionally. The study was conducted with a small number of subjects and a short duration. Further researches with a more detailed design are needed.
