본 연구는 과학 분야에서 한 개인이 창의성을 발현에 가는 과정에서 드러내는 다원적 요소의 발달적 특성들을 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구를 위해 세계적인 성취를 이룬 한국의 창의적 과학자 10인에 대한 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 이를 통해 그들의 과학적 성취가 발현되는 성장발달 과정에서 드러난 주요한 행동 특성들은 무엇이고, 그 과정에 중요하게 영향을 미친 요인들은 무엇이며, 그러고 그러한 행동특정들이 변화되어 간 과정들의 특징이 어떠한 지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 수집한 자료는 총괄적 창의성 체계모델인 '지식진화시스템 (Knowledge-Evolving Systems: KES)'(강정하, 2007)에 의해 분석되었다. 결과, 창의적 과학자는 어린 시절에 과학부문에 대한 강한 지적 호기심과 관심을 가졌었고, 커가면서 이 분야에 관련된 취미활동을 계속하였다. 대학에 들어가면서부터 그들은 전문지식을 체제적으로 습득하였으며, 오랜 집중을 계속했다. 이는 개인의 경험이 다원적 요소들에 의해 점진적으로 성장해 가는 과정이며, 나중에 창의적 성취로 이어진다. 발현과정은 발달심리적 특징과 학령, 그리고 환경적 요인에 의해 크게 4단계 아동기 청소년기 성인기 창조기-로 구분되었고, 단계가 나아감에 따라 드러난 특성들이 더 복잡해지고 강화되었으며, 한편으로는 더 정교하게 분화되었다.
