유방암 여성들의 다양한 문제들을 해결하기 위하여 많은 중재들이 이용되어 왔지만 어떤 한계가 있는가? 그동안 유방암 여성들의 이런 다양한 문제들을 해결하기 위하여 많은 중재들이 이용되어 왔다. 하지만 공적인 의료체계 내에서 이러한 중재들을 통합하여 제공하는 데에는 재정적인 한계가 따를 뿐 아니라, 전문가 중심으로 이루어지는 중재가 대부분이라서 유방암 여성들이 실제로 원하는 문제들을 확인하고 해결해주는 데에는 한계가 있다. 이러한 제한점들을 극복하기 위한 대안의 하나로 생겨난 것이 자조집단(self-help group)이다.
유방암 자조집단이란 무엇인가? 이러한 제한점들을 극복하기 위한 대안의 하나로 생겨난 것이 자조집단(self-help group)이다. 유방암 자조집단은 2000년대 이후 각 대형병원의 의료인이 중심이 되어 환자들을 임파워시킬 목적으로 설립되어 활성화되고 있으며, 이러한 자조집단은 ‘유방암 환우회’라고 불리고 있다. 유방암 환자들을 대표하는 두 단체인 한국 유방암환우연합재단(한유연)과 한국유방암환우총연합회(한유총)에 속해있는 유방암 환우회는 현재까지 26개이며 그 중 네 개는 지역별 환우회이고 나머지는 병원별 환우회이다.
