본 연구의 목적은 애완동물에 대한 태도와 초등학생의 공감능력과의 관계를 규명하고, 애완동물에 대한 태도와 초등학생의 공감능력의 정도가 성별, 학년별, 사육기간에 따라서 어떠한 차이가 있는지를 분석하는 데 있다. 이 연구를 수행하기 위하여 애완동물을 키운 경험이 있는 대전광역시 초등학교 학생 220명을 대상으로 애완동물에 대한 태도 검사와 공감능력 검사를 실시하여 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS win23에 의해 상관분석, 중다회귀분석, t-검증, 변량분석이 수행되었다. 분석결과 첫째, 애완동물에 대한 태도와 공감능력 정도는 관련성이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 애완동물에 대한 애정과 상호작용, 애완동물 소유의 즐거움이 공감능력과 밀접한 관련이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 애완동물에 대한 태도는 성별, 사육기간에 따라 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 공감능력은 성별, 사육기간에 따라 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났으나, 학년에 따라서는 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다.

This study examined the relationship between the attitudes toward pets and elementary school students' empathy ability, and analysed the difference in the attitude toward pets and the level of elementary school students' empathy depending on gender, school year and rearing period. To carry out this study, data were collected by giving a test on the attitudes toward pets and a test in empathy ability to 220 elementary school students in Daejeon Metropolitan City, who had a pet rearing experience in the past. With regard to the data collected, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, t-test and analysis of variance were carried out using SPSS win23. As a result of the analysis, the following facts were revealed. First, the attitudes and the degree of empathy ability for pets showed relevance. Second, affection for pets, interaction, and the joy of having pets were closely related to the empathy ability. Third, there was a significant difference in the attitude toward pets depending on gender and rearing period. Finally, there was a significant difference in empathy ability depending on the gender and rearing period. However, there was no significant difference depending on the school year.

본 연구에서 사용된 검사 도구는 [36]의 연구에서 개발한 어린이용 공감지수(Children' Empathizing Quotient: EQ-C)를 국내용으로 타당화한 ‘한국어판 자기 보고형 아동용 검사지(EQ-C)'[37]을 사용하였다. 본 도구는 총 26문항으로 정서적 요인, 인지적 요인과 사회적 요인을 평가하기 위하여, 각각 8문항, 9문항, 9문항으로 구성되었다.

대상 데이터

본 연구의 대상은 과거에 애완동물을 키운 경험이 있거나, 현재 애완동물을 키우고 있는 대전광역시 소재 초등학교 4~6학년 학생 220명(남 99명, 여 121명)으로 진행을 하였으며, 연구대상의 특성은 Table 1과 같다.

데이터처리

본 연구의 자료는 2015년 12월에 대전광역시에 소재하는 초등학교에서 수집되었다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS win23.0 프로그램을 통해 분석하였으며, 조사 신뢰도를 위해 Cronbach α계수를 산출하고, 상관분석, t-검증, 중다회귀분석, 변량분석을 실시하였다.

성능/효과

번째, 성별에 따른 애완동물에 대한 태도의 차이는 전체적으로 남자 초등학생에 비해, 여자 초등학생은 높은 수치를 나타났다. 애완동물에 태도에 관한 모든 하위 요인들도 전체의 결과와 똑같은 결과가 나타났으며, 특히 가정에서 애완동물을 사육해야 한다는 요인에서 여자 초등학생이 남자 초등학생보다 높은 수치를 보여주며, 성별에 따라 유의한 차이가 있었다.
세 번째, 성별에 따른 초등학생들의 공감능력에 대한 차이는 공감능력에 대한 모든 하위요인인 정서적 공감, 인지적 공감 그리고 사회적 공감에서 여자 초등학생이 남자 초등학생에 비해 월등히 높게 나타났다. 즉 여자 아동이 남자 아동보다 공감능력을 더 많이 갖고 있다는 것을 밝혀주고 있다.
첫째, 애완동물에 대한 태도가 초등학생의 공감능력은 관련성이 있었으며, 애완동물에 대한 애정 및 애완동물의 소유에 대한 즐거움은 정서적 공감능력과 관련성 있는 것으로 나타났다. 애완동물 가정에서의 사육과 애완동물 소유에 대한 즐거움은 사회적 공감과의 관련성이 낮거나 없었다.

후속연구

즉, 사람-사람사이의 공감 능력과 동물에 대한 태도 사이에 밀접한 관계가 있으며, 이와 같이, 공감능력이 높은 사람일수록 동물의 복지에도 더 많은 관심과 태도를 보인다고 밝혔다. 또한 반사회적인 행동과 공감 능력의 결핍을 개선하기 위해 동물에 대한 잠재적인 중요성을 강조하며, 동물에 대한 공감과 태도사이에서 특정한 관련성을 밝히기 위한 추가적인 연구를 제안하였다.
애완동물에 대한 태도의 하위요인과 아동의 공감능력의 하위요인의 신뢰도가 낮게 나타났기 때문에 후속 연구에서는 이 두 가지 척도에 대한 것을 충분히 고려하여 연구가 이루어질 것을 제안한다.

	피어슨 적률 상관분석을 통한 애완동물에 대한 태도와 초등학생의 공감능력과의 관계 실험 결과는?	Table 4는 애완동물에 대한 태도와 초등학생의 공감능력과의 관계를 알아보기 위해 피어슨 적률 상관분석을 실시한 결과이다. Table 4에 의하면, 애완동물에 대한 애정 및 상호작용과 정서적 공감과의 관계는 r=.295, 애완동물의 소유에 대한 즐거움과 정서적 공감과의 관계는 r=.269로, 애완동물에 대한 애정 및 상호작용과 애완동물의 소유에 대한 즐거움은 정서적 공감능력과 관련성있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 애완동물에 대한 애정 및 상호작용과 인지적 공감과의 관계는 r=.225, 애완동물의 소유에 대한 즐거움과 인지적 공감과의 관계는 r=.245로 애완동물에 대한 애정 및 상호작용과 애완동물 소유에 대한 즐거움은 인지적 공감능력과 관련성이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 가정에서의 애완동물 사육과 애완동물의 소유에 대한 즐거움은 사회적 공감과의 관계는 낮은 것으로 나타났다.
