국내 의료기관에서 시행하는 제한적인 면회로 인한 문제점은 무엇인가? 대부분의 국내 의료기관에서는 환자의 안정과 감염 예방 그리고 의료진의 치료와 간호활동에 방해받지 않기 위해 1일 2차례 정도의 제한적인 면회를 허용하고 있다(Kim, 2010). 이러한 가족과의 격리로 환자는 각종 스트 레스를 경험하며(Fredriksen & Ringsberg, 2006), 그 결과 치료와 간호에 대한 만족도 역시 일반 병동에 비해 낮다(Han, 2008). 또한 환자뿐만 아니라 환자를 지켜보는 가족도 환자에 대한 죄책감, 면회의 제한, 치료 및 간호에 참여하지 못하는 상황에서 불안과 스트레스를 경험한다(Kim, 2002; Kim 2007). 이러한 이유로 국내에서는 중환자 가족들의 환자에 관한 정보 제공, 면회시간 연장, 그리고 환자의 직접 간호 참여에 관한 요구가 증가하고 있다 (Han, 2008).
자율면회의 궁극적인 목표는 무엇인가? 자율면회의 궁극적인 목표는 환자의 회복기간 동안 더 나은 쪽으로 가족을 투입시켜 환자의 치료와 안정에 도움이 되는 것이다(Olsen, Dysvik, & Hansen, 2009). 그러나 이러한 자율면회 시 중요한 점은 간호사가 환자의 안전한 치료를 받고자 하는 환자의 요구와 가족의 요구 사이에서 균형을 잘 이루어야 한다는 것이다(Farrell, Joseph, & Schwartz-Barcott, 2005).
