Objectives: The study was a cross-sectional research to examine dental hygiene students' multi-cultural experiences, emotional intelligence and cultural competency and to understand the correlations among them. Methods: The study was conducted from September $1^{st}$ to October $31^{st}$ 2016, based on the survey of 449 students in the department of dental hygiene at 7 Universities. The questionnaire consisted of 57 questions including general characteristics (n=7), multi-cultural experiences (n=7), emotional intelligence (n=16) and cultural competency (n=27). Results: Each score of students' emotional intelligence and cultural competency is 3.43 and 3.01 respectively in 5-point scale. An analysis of correlations between emotional intelligence and cultural competency shows that the higher the emotional intelligence, the higher the cultural competency (r=0.342). The factors affecting the cultural competency include use of emotions (${\beta}=0.327$, p<0.001), control of emotions (${\beta}=0.254$, p=0.001), frequency of multi-cultural media (${\beta}=0.221$, p<0.001) and experience of multi-cultural class (${\beta}=0.221$, p=0.002). The modified explanatory power in this model is 28.2% (F=10.856, p<0.001). Conclusions: There was a positive correlation between emotional intelligence and cultural competency, and the contacts with multi-culture and experience of class are identified as the affecting factors. Dental hygiene students should acquire theoretical experiences regarding the multi-culture through curriculum or continuous educations and it is necessary to promote such educations in order to develop and apply the programs for the enhancement of emotional intelligence.

문화 역량 도구는 한[20]이 서[7]의 개념을 바탕으로 개발한 간호 대학생의 문화적 역량 측정 도구를 치위생 분야에 맞게 전문가의 의견을 받아 수정 보완하였다. 치위생(학)과 학생의 문화 역량 측정의 타당성을 위한 탐색적 요인분석 결과로 문항별 하위 요인을 문화 인식 6문항, 문화 지식 7문항, 문화 민감성 4문항, 문화 기술 및 적용 5문항, 문화 경험5문항으로 재구성하였다.
설문내용은 인구 사회학적 특성 7문항, 다문화 경험7문항, 감성지능 16문항, 문화 역량 27문항으로 구성하였다. 설문 내용은 전문가 3인의 조언을 받아 수정·보완하였으며, 81명을 대상으로 예비조사를 시행한 후 최종 설문지로 확정하였다.
인구 사회학적 특성으로 연령, 성별, 학제, 주거지역, 종교, 성적, 용돈(지출) 7문항, 다문화 경험으로 해외여행 경험 여부, 여행한 대륙, 외국어 구사 능력, 다른 문화를 접한 대중매체, 다른 문화에 대한 정보를 얻는 곳, 다문화 교육 여부, 다문화 교육 요구도 7문항으로 구성되었다.

대상 데이터

2016년 9월 1일부터 10월 31일까지 연구대상으로 선정된 대학 학과장님께 전화로 사전 동의를 구한 뒤 자기기입식 설문지를 회송용 봉투와 함께 우편으로 발송하였다. 선정된 7개 대학에 재학 중인 3, 4학년 인원에 맞추어 총 480부를 발송하여 474부가 수거되었으며 불성실한 설문지 25부를 제외한 449부(93.5%)를 최종대상으로 선정하였다. 설문조사는 연구목적, 설문 응답 요령에 대한 설명문 및 동의서를 동봉하여 설문을 이해하고 동의한 자를 대상자로 정하였으며, 해당학과 담당자가 설문지를 배부 후 수거하여 우편으로 발송하게 하였다.
연구대상자의 모집단은 전국 소재 치위생(학)과가 개설된 3, 4년제 대학교 치위생(학)과에 재학중인 만 19세 이상 대학생을 대상으로 하였다. 전국 치위생(학)과 개설 대학의 분포도를 고려하여 권역별 3, 4년제 대학(교)을 임의 편의 추출을 통한 7개 학교를 대상으로 각 학교 교수에게 사전 동의를 구하여 협조 허가를 받은 치위생(학)과를 선정하였다.

데이터처리

인구 사회학적 특성에 따른 다문화경험, 감성지능, 문화 역량의 수준 차이는 Independent t-test, ANOVA로 분석하였으며, Duncan의 사후 검정을 하였다. 감성지능과 문화 역량의 상관관계를 알아보기 위해 Pearson’s correlation, 문화 역량에 영향을 미치는 요인을 알아보기 위해 Multiple regression analysis로 분석하였다.

감성지능 도구는 정과 김[18]이 Wong과Law[19]의 집단 연구를 위해 개발한 심리측정학적인 자기보고식 측정법 WLEIS (Wong & Law Emotional Intelligence Scale)를 번안한 구조화된 설문 도구를 사용하였다. 자기 감성 이해 4문항, 타인 감성 이해 4문항, 감성 활용 4문항, 감성 조절 4문항으로 총 16문항으로 구성되었다.

성능/효과

후속연구

따라서 치위생(학) 전공 학생들의 문화 역량 향상을 위해서는 교과과정에서 다문화 관련 수업이나 매체를 통해 학생에게 이론적인 경험을 제공하여 타문화에 대한 경험을 높여주고, 그들의 문화를 수용하는데 도움이 되는 감성지능 향상 프로그램 개발이 필요하다.
그러나 치위생 분야에서 문화 역량의 필요성과 나아갈 방향을 제시하였다는데 그 의의를 둘 수 있다. 추후 치위생(학)과 학생뿐 아니라 치과위생사의 문화 역량을 측정할 수 있는 도구개발 및 문화 역량에 영향을 미치는 관련 요인을 파악하기 위한 지속적인 연구가 이루어져야겠다.

	감성지능이 문화역량에 어떻게 영향을 미치는가?	감성지능과 문화 역량을 비교한 선행 연구가 부족하여 다양한 고찰은 어려우나, 김[11]의 연구에서도 자신의 감성과 타인 감성을 알고 이해하는 정도가 높을수록 다양한 문화를 수용할 수 있다고 해석하였다. 본 연구에서의 결과와 선행연구를 종합해 본 결과 나와 타인의 감성을 이해하고 그것을 조절 및 활용하는 능력을 통해 다문화권 사람의 이해와 수용이 넓어지는 결과로 이어져 문화 역량에 큰 영향을 미치는 것을 시사한다.
