메르스는 언제, 어디에서 처음 발생하였는가? | 현대 사회는 영양 및 환경상태의 개선, 항생제 및 백신의 개발 등으로 감염성 질환이 상당히 감소하였으나, 이동수단의 발달로 질병의 전파가 범국가적 감염병 대유행으로 발생하고 있다[1]. 급성 호흡기 감염병인 메르스(Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, MERS)는 2012년 사우디아라비아에서 처음 발생되었으며, 국내에서는 중동 여행객 남성이 2015년 5월 20일 메르스 확진 이후 2015년 12월 23일 보건복지부의 메르스 종식 선언까지 확진환자 186명, 사망 38명, 의심사례 16,752명이 발생하였다[2]. 첫 번째 사례가 발생하기 전까지 생소했던 메르스로 인해 한동안 거리에서는 마스크를 쓰고 다니는 사람들을 흔히 볼 수 있었고, 휴교, 각종 문화 행사 축소나 취소, 관광객 감소 등 국내 교육, 관광, 정치, 경제 분야 등 사회 전반에 중대한 영향을 끼쳤다[3]. | |
메르스의 전파경로는 어떠한가? | 메르스는 베타 코로나바이러스에 속하는 메르스 코로나바이러스(MERS-CoV)라는 신종 바이러스에 의한 호흡기 감염증이다[4]. 아직까지 전파경로가 명백하게 밝혀지지는 않았지만, 선행 연구에서 사람 대 사람 전파 경로로 병원에서의 긴밀한 접촉과 호흡기 침방울을 통한 것으로 알려져 있다[5]. 실제로 국내에서의 메르스 전파는 확진자 186명 중 184명이 병원에서 감염되는 것에서 보듯이 병원 내 전파와 병원 간 전파로 이루어졌다[2]. |
