대학생활경험을 탐색하는 것은 진로교육의 방향을 설정하는데 왜 필요한가? 대학생 시기는 학교에서 직업세계로의 전환을 위한 진로적응 준비를 하는 중요한 시기이며(Jang & Kim, 2011), 대학생의 진로발달수준은 학교생활이나 대인관계 등과 같은 대학생활적응과 유의한 관계가 있기 때문에(Hwang & Park, 2005) 대학생활경험을 탐색하는 것은 진로교육의 방향을 설정하는데 필요하다. 한편, 우리나라 남자 대학생들 대부분은 대학생활 도중 군 복무를 하게 되고 이런 경우 학업을 중단했다가 복학하는 과정을 겪게 된다.
군복무를 마치고 복학한 남자 간호학생은 일반적인 군복무 후 남자 대학생과 어떤 차이가 있는가? 더 이상 군 입대라는 탈출구도 없어 학업에 대한 압박감을 느끼기도 하였지만 주위의 관심 속에 네트워크를 확대해 가는 노력을 할 수 있었다. 그러나, 남자 간호학생을 대하는 사람들의 태도나 취업한 선후배의 부정적인 경험에 대한 소식으로 간호 전문직에 대한 확신은 흔들리고 그때마다 미래에 대한 혼란이 커졌다. 본 연구에서 나타난 남자 간호학생의 이러한 경험은 일반적인 남자 대학생이 군복무 후 자신의 삶을 좀 더 적극적으로 이끄는 경향이 강하고 학업동기가 높으며 태도가 긍정적으로 변화되었음을 깨닫게 된다는 보고(Kim, 2016)와는 차이가 있음을 보여주는 결과이다.
