This study attempts to compare the diversity of preferences in apartment housing according to the modern family structure. The focus of this study is to classify family groups that have different needs in regards to housing environments. The reserch approach applied is a stastistical analysis based on a questionnaire conducted by random sample in Seoul, suburbs of Seoul, and Taejeon. A total of 1064 sample were analyed using SAS. Family struture were then classified into 6 groups as follows. 1)Nuclear families with children and single income 2) Nuclear families with children and double income 3) Married couples without children 4) Multi-generational families 5) New-generational families 6) Single person households. The analysis of the differences among the groups centers on the following issue: differences in perferences for residential areas, preferences that affect site planning factors, differences in needs with regard to interior spaces. The results are discussed in order to establish basic considerations for a better approach to design apartment housing in Korea.
