The author reviewed 212 research articles and 240 clinical-cases (from 1982 to 2007) which explored Korean family problems and related variables as a function of six developmental stages: early and middle childhood, adolescence, and young, middle, and late adulthood. The most common problems were depression, externalized behaviors, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. Across all developmental stages, parental marital conflict was the most common and influential variable affecting family problems. Children's problems were related with parents' negative child-rearing. Lack of communication among family members and low socio-economic status appeared as influencing variables to family problems. The results suggest that emotional and developmental problems of individual family member are significantly influenced by other members of the family, particularly the parents, as well as various variables in the social environment. This understanding offers important clues to family therapists on how to intervene when such problems occur.
