As one of potential electrophoretic ink materials in e-paper display applications, TiO₂ nanoparticles with hydrophilic surface characteristics were encapsulated with poly(methyl methacrylate) via a dispersion polymerization technique. In addition, to enhance their electrophoretic properties, we introduced a dielectric functional group by using a co-monomer, ethylene glycol methyl ether acrylate (EGMEA). Characteristics of the product particles, such as the density and the chemical structure, were examined using a gas pycnometer, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Charge enhancement from the dielectric group was found to be effective when a charge control agent (CCA) was added to the suspending fluid, which was prepared by dispersing the fabricated nanoparticles into a low dielectric medium. This synergistic effect between the functional group and the CCA was confirmed with a zeta potential analyzer.
