This is the study for small unit leaders to gain core competencies required in combat situation. Recently, the sense of national security is getting weaker, and people are not concerned about national defense. Also, the military has studied old-fashioned wars such as the Vietnam war or the Korean war. So, We want to find the most suitable small unit leaders' core competencies under the modern war situation through this study. This study was performed on 3 steps. The 1st step is the preparatory step at which We derived the leaders' competencies from records, manuals, and handwritings on the battle. At the 2nd step, We performed delphi investigations twice into officers coming from battle areas, and derived 32 competencies from expert workshop. The 3rd step is the step to determine core competencies at which We conducted questionnaire from soldiers participating ATT and confirmed correlation between competencies a leader holds and the combat result. Finally, We conducted questionnaire from control officers working in the KCTC, over how much important a leader's competencies are. We chose high 30% competencies from the upper 3 ways, and applied the AHP to derive high 50% competencies. So, We selected 10 core competencies. Company commanders' competencies are not far from platoon leaders' ones. But core competencies in combat situation partially differ from ones in peace.
