Seasonal Variation of Sedimentary Structures and Ichnofacies in the Doouri Open-coast Tidal Flat, Southwestern Korea

The Doouri tidal flat in the southwestern Korean coast can be characterized as a non-barred open-coast tidal flat influenced strongly by wave action approaching directly from offshore, resulting in tide-dominated tidal flat in summer and wave-dominated one in winter by monsoon wind. The tidal flat can be divided largely into tidal beach, intertidal flat and lower mud flat based on topographic and sediment characteristics. Sedimentary structures of the tidal beach are dominated by parallel and/or inclined lamination mainly of medium sands. Lower mud flat consists of semi-consolidated and highly bioturbated mud facies. Doouri intertidal flat consists mostly of sand facies formed by wave actions such as parallel laminated, gently inclined or undulatedto curved-laminated, and cross-laminated sand facies, except during summer season. Thinly laminated mud and parallel-laminated mud/sand beds formed mainly by tidal sedimentation are common during summer season. This facies which lies to the upper part on summer cancores. In spring and fall seasons, sand facies interbedded with mud layers are dominated. Climbing-ripple cross-lamination of fine sand and silt can be typified as summer facies whereas hummocky cross-stratification(HCS) is characteristic of winter facies. Based on the analyses of ichnofacies, the main three ichnofacies are representative of those of the Doouri tidal flat: 1) Psilonichnus ichnofacies in the tidal beach, 2) Skolithos-proximal Cruziana ichnofacies in the intertidal falt, and 3) Glossifungites and Cruziana ichnofacies in the lower mud flat. Ichnogenera in the intertidal flat are dominated by Skolithos and Palaeophycus in spring, Palaeophycus and Planolites in summer, Psilonichnus and Rosselia in fall, and Skolithos, Palaeophycus and fugichnia in winter. Dominant ichnogenera in this intertidal flat are nearly identical both in spring and winter seasons, but the fugichnia do not occur characteristically during spring season, suggesting that depositional events such as storms, typhoons and/or processes causing rapid sedimentation might not happen in the intertidal flat. In general, horizontal ichno-structures are dominant in the spring and summer deposits, whereas vertical ichno-structures are common in the fall and winter deposits. The previous studies in modern tidal flats focus mainly on the characteristics of ichnogenus, whereas the main target of this paper is the change of sedimentaryand ichno-facies with seasons in the open-coast tidal flat. This work warrants for a detailed interpretation of ancient deposits as well as ones in the dynamic recent tidal-flat settings which show a clear seasonal change in preserved deposits.
