The purposes of this paper were to describe the job stress, depression, drinking, and smoking behavior among the Korean employed men and to identify the pathway of the potential relationships among these four variables. The aim of this study was to provide basicinformation for the health improvement of Korean employee. Data were collected with 230 employed men, age of 20 and older, living in Seoul, between April and Jun 2003. A self-report questionnaire was used for this study. The questionnaire was consisted of 23 items for job stress, 40 items for depression, 5 items for drinking behaviors, 4 items for smoking behavior, and 10 items for the general characteristics of the subjects. SPSS 10.0 for PC was used for the statistical analysis: frequency, percentile, means and SD were calculated to describe the sample, and Chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficiency were used to examine the potential relationships among variables. AMOS4 was used for the pathway analysis. The mean of the job stress of the employed Korean men was 2.65 measured by the 5-point Likert scale. Depression scored 1.98, by the 4-point Likert scale, higher than the general population reported in a current study. About 88.3% of employed men were habitual drinkers and 47.8% were smokers. When we compared the hypothetical model, modified model 1 and 2, modified model 2 appeared the best fitness and the highest path-coefficience. According to this model, job stress of the employed men influenced their depression, then the depression influenced amount of drinking and smoking. Additionally, amount of drinking influenced the amount of smoking. By controlling the job stress of the employed men, we can prevent the depression and reduce the amount of drinking and smoking of the Korean employee.
