This study, based on survey data, aims to investigate socio-economic differentiation of food consumption modes in South Korea. We have examined attitudes regarding reflexive consumption, food choice motives and buying alternative foods according to socio-economic status. The study also considered factors such as food risk anxiety and knowledge. The findings are as follows. First, socio-economic differentiation of food consumption increases with class, income and education. Second, there exits difference in sub-dimensions of food consumption style(the upper class consumes alternative food more than others in general while education is the most important variable in reflexive attitude toward food). Third, socio-economic status does not have significant relation with food hazard knowledge. Fourth, it seems that there is a bifurcation of food consumption patterns according to socio-economic status: the more upper class people are “substantive alternativists” while the more lower class people are “conventionalists.” Fifth, most consumers belong to a contradictory type as their knowledge on food hazards, their reflexive attitude, and their alternative food consumption patterns are not statistically consistent. To conclude, while socio-economic status is an important factor, the future of a sustainable food system depends on the compromised/contradictory consumers who have food risk knowledge and a reflexive attitude. Whether they could be the ‘food citizens’ of the future is an important question to be asked.
