Abstract The full waveform inversion (FWI) has been widely used for constructing high-resolution velocity models. The adjoint method was used to calculate the update direction and the optimization method L-BFGS was used to solve the nonlinear inverse problem. The wavenumbers retrieved by the gradient of the objective function were compared to the wavenumbers calculated analytically in the frequency domain. The good fittings achieved in the performed tests confirm the equivalence of calculating the gradient in the time or frequency domains. The time-domain acoustic FWI was applied to a 2D synthetic experiment and the 1D Fourier transform was used to quantify the wavenumbers illuminated by the L1 and L2 norms.
