An underground joint between sewer pipe and reinforced concrete manhole riser is tightly sealed, and resistant to breakage caused by settling or frost heaving by a tapered, elastomeric, tubular connector boot, capable of flexing and yielding under lateral shift. A smooth faced hole is core drilled in the riser wall. The large end of the boot is expanded radially, by an expandable metal band, to a permanently enlarged diameter and internally clamped within the hole which compresses the material of the boot against the hole surface at 1000 psi, or more. The band is expanded and clamped in a direction normal to the central longitudinal axis of the sleeve by hydraulic jack means. The pipe end is inserted in the boot, up to the inside wall of the manhole, but is yieldable in any direction without leakage or breakage.

A method of yieldably and flexibly connecting a section of sewer pipe into a side wall of a manhole riser, vertically disposed in a sewer line trench, in which the sewer pipe is received at one side thereof, by means of a flexible tubular connector boot, said method comprising the steps of: determining a point of reference on the outer surface of the manhole riser through which the central longitudinal axis of the sewer pipe is to be located; core drilling the reinforced concrete wall of said riser along a circular path of coring, whose centre coincides with the said point of reference, to form a sewer pipe porthole, of predetermined greater diameter than the diameter of said pipe, defined by an exposed, smooth, circular edge surface; inserting one end of said connector boot in a loose fit in said porthole, then expanding said end radially in a direction normal to the axis of said porthole and internally clamping said expanded end against the smooth surface of said porthole to seal the same; then inserting the inner end of said section of sewer pipe into said boot and inside the pipe porthole, and then externally clamping the opposite end of said boot around said pipe section.
