Heat transferring liquid is pumped by a peristaltic pump from a reservoir through a heat exchanger to a disposable applicator pad through flexible conduits. Apparatus for selectively heating or cooling a local area of the body comprising: a source of heat transferring liquid; an applicator pad adapted to be applied to said local area and including means defining a conduit for carrying said liquid through said pad; heat exchanger means receiving said liquid and including thermoelectric diode means for producing heat when an electrical potential of one polarity is applied thereto and for absorbing heat when an electrical potential of the opposite polarity is applied thereto; pump means for pumping said liquid from said source through said heat exchanger means and said applicator pad; and control circuit means including temperature-sensitive means responsive to the temperature of said liquid for controlling the polarity and duration of application of an electrical potential to said thermoelectric diode means under operator control.
