A power unit comprises an internal combustion compression ignited engine having variable-volume combustion chambers and supercharged by a turbocompressor having a turbine which receives the engine exhaust gases. A bypass pipe which is permanently open during operation of the engine returns the air not absorbed by the engine to the turbine with a pressure drop which, if appreciable, is independent of the flow rate and increases with the compressor outlet pressure.
