A device for and process of pre-heating the intake air of a supercharged, low-compression ratio Diesel engine when operating at low loads, comprising the apparatus for and steps of taking the heat required for said pre-heating from at least one portion of the exhaust gases of said engine and conveying it to at least one part of the intake air.
