A method and apparatus is provided for separating heavier particulate material from a mixture of light particulate material, heavy particulate material and gas. The apparatus includes a vessel having an outlet at a lower portion thereof wherein particulate material flows toward the outlet and is contacted by countercurrent flow of gas for uplifting of lighter particles of particulate material.
