A quaternized polymer having recurring units of the formula ##STR## wherein X .crclbar. represents an anion derived from an organic or mineral acid; R' 2 is an aliphatic radical having a maximum of 20 carbon atoms; R' 1 is an alphatic, alicyclic or arylaliphatic radical containing a minimum of 2 carbon atoms and a maximum of 20 carbon atoms, or R' 1 and R' 2 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a ring capable of containing a second heteroatom other than said nitrogen; A represents a divalent group of the formula ##STR## wherein, x, y and t are whole numbers ranging from 0 to 11 and being such that the sum (x+y+t) is greater than or equal to 0 and less than 18, and E and K represent hydrogen or an aliphatic radical having less than 18 carbon atoms; B represents a divalent group of the formula ##STR## wherein D and G represent hydrogen or an aliphatic radical having less than 18 carbon atoms and v, z, and u are whole numbers ranging from 0 to 11, two of them being able to be simultaneously equal to 0 such that the sum (v+z+u) is greater than or equal to 1 and lower than 18, and such that the sum (v+z+u) is greater than 1 when the sum (x+y+t) is equal to 0, and n is a whole number equal to 2 or 3. The polymers are usefully employed in cosmetic compositions for application to the hair or skin.

A hair dye composition comprising a cream or gel a carrier a quaternized polymer having recurring units of the formula ##STR## wherein X .crclbar. represents an anion derived from an organic or mineral acid, R' 2 is an aliphatic radical having a maximum of 20 carbon atoms, R' 1 is alkyl having 2-20 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl having 5 or 6 carbon atoms or phenylalkyl wherein the alkyl moiety has 1-3 carbon atoms, or R' 1 and R' 2 together represent a polymethylene radical having 4 or 5 carbon atoms or --(CH 2 ) 2 --O--(CH 2 ) 2 --, A represents a divalent group of the formula ##STR## wherein x, y and t are whole numbers ranging from 0 to 11 and being such that the sum (x+y+t) is greater than or equal to 0 and less than 18, and E and K represent hydrogen, B represents a divalent group of the formula ##STR## wherein D and G represent hydrogen and v, z and u are whole numbers ranging from 0 to 11, two of them being able to be simultaneously equal to 0 such that the sum (v+z+u) is greater than or equal to 1 and lower than 18, and such that the sum (v+z+u) is greater than 1 when the sum (x+y+t) is equal to 0, and n is a whole number equal to 2 or 3, said polymer being present in an amount between 0.25 and 10 weight percent of said composition, and an effective amount of hair dye to color the hair. 2. The hair dye composition of claim 1 wherein X represents a halide, R' 1 represents an alkyl containing 2-20 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl having 5 or 6 carbon atoms or phenylalkyl wherein the alkyl moiety has 1-3 carbon atoms; E, K, D and G represent hydrogen; v, z and u represent a number ranging from 1 to 5, two of them being able to be equal to 0; x, y and t represent numbers ranging from 0 to 5; and R' 2 is alkyl having 1-20 carbon atoms; or R' 1 and R' 2 together represent --(CH 2 ) 2 --O--(CH 2 ) 2 --. 3. The hair dye composition of claim 1 wherein R' 1 is alkyl having 2-18 carbon atoms; R' 2 is alkyl having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms; or R' 1 and R' 2 together represent --(CH 2 ) 2 --O--(CH 2 ) 2 --, A is polymethylene having 2 to 12 carbon atoms or polymethylene having 2 to 12 carbon atoms and branched by one or two alkyl substituents having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, B is xylylidene, polymethylene having 3 to 10 carbon atoms or polymethylene having 3 to 10 carbon atoms and branched by one or two alkyl substituents having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, and X is chloride or bromide. 4. The hair dye composition of claim 1 wherein said vehicle is a cream. 6. The hair dye composition of claim 5 wherein said cream comprises a soap of a C 12 to C 20 fatty acid and an alkalizing agent. 7. The hair dye composition of claim 5 wherein said cream comprises a natural or synthetic alcohol having between 12 and 20 carbon atoms in admixture with an emulsifier. 8. The hair dye composition of claim 36 wherein said cream also includes an effective amount of a fatty amide. 9. The hair dye composition of claim 1 wherein said hair dye is a direct hair dye. 10. The hair dye composition of claim 1 wherein said hair dye is an oxidation hair dye. 11. The hair dye composition of claim 1 which also includes, as an oxyethylenated non-ionic compound, selected from the group consisting of oleyl alcohol having 4 moles of ethylene oxide, oleylalcohol having 10 moles of ethylene oxide, a C 10 -C 12 synthetic fatty alcohol having 4 moles of ethylene oxide, a C 10 -C 12 synthetic fatty alcohol having 6 moles of ethylene oxide, a C 9 -C 15 synthetic fatty alcohol having 2 moles of ethylene oxide, a C 9 -C 15 synthetic fatty alcohol having 6 moles of ethylene oxide, a C 9 -C 15 synthetic fatty alcohol having 9 moles of ethylene oxide, nonylphenol polyether having 4 moles of ethylene oxide and nonylphenol polyether having 9 moles of ethylene oxide, said oxyethylenated non-ionic compound being present in an amount ranging from 5 to 60 weight percent of said composition and, as a solvent, a lower aliphatic alcohol or a glycol present in an amount ranging from 2 to 20 percent by weight of said composition. 12. The hair dye composition of claim 1 which also includes, as a polyglycerolated non-ionic compound, selected from the group consisting of oleyl alcohol having 2 moles of glycerol and oleyl alcohol having 4 moles of glycerol, said polyglycerolated non-ionic compound being present in an amount ranging from 5 to 60 weight percent of said composition and, as a solvent, a lower aliphatic alcohol or a glycol present in an amount ranging from 2 to 20 percent by weight of said composition. 13. The hair dye composition of claim 11 or 12 which also includes, as an alkaline alkyl sulfate or an oxyethylenated alkaline alkyl sulfate, selected from the group consisting of sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, triethanolamine lauryl sulfate, monoethanolamine lauryl sulfate, sodium laurylether sulfate oxyethylenated with 2.2 moles of ethylene oxide and monoethanolamine laurylether sulfate oxyethylenated with 2.2 moles of ethylene oxide, present in an amount ranging from 0.5 to 15 percent by weight of said composition. 14. The hair dye composition of claim 11 or 12 which also includes a fatty amide. 15. The hair dye composition of claim 11 or 12 which also includes a natural or synthetic fatty alcohol. 16. The hair dye composition of claim 11 or 12 admixed with hydrogen peroxide. 17. A process for dyeing hair comprising applying thereto the hair dye composition of claim 1, permitting said composition to remain in contact with the hair for a time sufficient to obtain the desired dyeing effect and thereafter rinsing the hair.
