A process for treating wastewaters, comprising the steps of: (a) forming a mixture of influent wastewater and a powdered adsorbent capable of adsorbing impurities from said wastewaters; (b) passing said mixture downward through a fixed media filter through which air passes by natural or forced ventilation and having microorganisms attached to the media, wherein wastewater, adsorbent, microorganisms and air are contacted; and (c) separating adsorbent from said mixture after passage through the fixed media filter to produce a treated and clarified wastewater.
