An apparatus for producing powdered or granular particles comprising: a sealed chamber with a lid in the form of a conical funnel expanding toward said chamber, a concentrated heat source having an axis arranged on an inclined lateral wall of said conical lid on one side of said chamber, means for feeding and rotating the end of a billet which enters the chamber through an opening in the opposite side of said chamber from said lid into contact with said heat source whereby the end of the billet is melted and the molten material is removed from the billet by centrifugal force in the form of small droplets which are solidified in the chamber and wherein the axis of said heat source is displaced from the axis of the billet.
